Tailgate lock

Do all Coupe tailgate have to be opened with the key ?
I have to use the key on my 1995 coupe to open the tailgate or is this something else to fix ? :p

I had "k" plate 2.3e coupe,just push the button,but after a time it went **** up and would only open on the key.
My current 95 2.6 coupe is still in working order as per factory, a pal of mine at a vag repair shop says they have always been an **** of a lock assembly

Do you mean that the central locking doesn;t work? If so:
The rear lock is opened by a central locking actuator that only operates the lock when the key is in the vertical position. The actuator is driven by the CL vacuum pump. If the vacuum pipe has a leak, the actuator won't work - its normally easy to tell if this is the case as the pump will run on after the other doors have locked or been opened (can't remember which, might be both). Similarly, if the arm between the lock and actuator has been bent or is out of alignment, it won't work. Best thing to do is to get to the back of the lock by moving the carpet and see what's happening with it.

OK, just read the handbook & guess what....Yes another Doh moment :D
Didn't realise that the key went anticlockwise as well as clockwise .....works fine without the key now i know to leave the lock horizontally. :Blush2:

Mine works like this, if the key slot is horizontal the boot lock works with the central locking, if the key slot is vertical the boot stays locked whether the doors are locked or unlocked with the central locking.

sorry to jump in here i have a problem like this although my key is horizontel the lock dont unlock ive checked the actuator and it moves with the central locking any ideas on what i can check:confused::confused::confused::confused:
