I have a 2002 passat 2.0SE petrol engine had it about a year now, recently I have had the exhaust emission light on. I have been to the local garage I use and they told me I have a P0411 error code something to do with secondary air flow. They seem to be at a loss to what it means, they have been intouch with the local VW dealers and they are saying that they dont know what the code means. Has anyone any idea exactly what it means, the car itself is running fine.

Hello gordchris. There's a technical section of the forum where you might get help for this. Lots of people have these fancy code reading machines of which you speak and some of them even know what the codes mean. Try having a look in the technical bit, or searching the site with your code maybe?

Exhaust emission lights - doncha just love 'em?!
No? Oh.

Your local VW dealership is telling porkies.

A search of www.clubb5.com gives 138 results.

The 2.0 engine isn't available in the USA so the procedures are all tailored towards the 1.8T and the V6 but the process and the parts are, in the main the same.

This one lists the possible faults and things to check

http://www.passatworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=175620

And this one breaks it down into what is wrong and what needs to be fixed

The car will continue to work as normal, but you'll have the CEL (warning light) and you'll fail your emissions test within the MOT (if it's due soon)

Call it a stroke of luck if you want but my car passed its mot two days before the light came on. My local garage have cleared the fault for the time being but I am not holding my breath. Thanks for the help

i would be cautious about clearing faults without actually fixing the fault, it may not be a constant issue, hence the light not coming back on yet, but if it was there in the first place and they've simply cleared the fault codes, it is quite irresponsible on the garage's part to do so without so much as investigating the fault.

i would be very very careful as you may be risking long term damage to your car. :beerchug:

I agree with you, but the garage have the matter in hand and I will be taking the car back in sometime next week. One thing I have found out is that it is a very common problem and I am amazed of the amount of people who just ignore the light. These forums are a great help and I am sure with the help of some of the information I have been given from the guys on here and a few quid this fault will be rectified. At the moment its looking like something to do with the combi valve or an ajoining hose or pipe. Thanks for taking the time to reply.
