mpg reading

hi I have recently purchased a 1997 a4 avant 1.8t. it has done 137000 miles, is in fair condition and runs like a dream. it does have a few niggling problems though. i had trouble one evening with the alarm repeatedly going off so I ended up disconnecting the battery at 3am. when I reconnected the battery later that day I discovered it had reset all the dash (apart from the milage) now I cannot get the mpg to read properly, it keeps changing from 12mpg to 120mpg, I have tried to reset it but nothing seems to work.

just keep driveing it will sort its self and the alarm your back up batt is ****** u need a new 1
