Hi everyone, I have a 1997 A4 1.8 Auto, I have only had it a few months but recently have noticed that the car does not all ways change gear when it should, for e.g with normal driving around town it changes at say 2.5k revs but sometimes it does not change until 4k revs even when driving slowly it just refuses to change gear, and when it does finally change gear it jerks, it can be very annoying as the revs are screaming but it will just not change when it should.

It had water leak from the bulk head which resulted in the gearbox control unit getting wet, I have dried it out all though the inside seemed to be dry any way just the outer casing was really wet.

Do I just need a replacement control unit or is it the gearbox itself?

Any help would really be appreciated, also the MPG seems to be really high, I only get approx 17mpg around town and I do not drive it hard at all, is this right?

Check transmisson fluid level, or have it changed for fresh fluid...

Your fuel economy will go bad if she's revving too high and hanging on to the lower gears for too long

Thank you for the replies,

I had the gearbox fluid changed the other day, they said it was low and it is driving better but has once reved high as before so I do not think it is resolved.

I am thinking it must be the control unit but am having trouble locating a second hand replacement, does anyone know where I can get one, the part numbers on the Siemens unit is 5WK3 332A K01 and the Audi part number is 01N 927 733 CF

Did you discover a solution? A friend of mine is suffering from the same symptoms.

Could be a build up of debris in the governor - debris from clutch wear. I have no idea if this is serviceable without removing the transmission. Fluid change can help but you'll probably find it carries on hanging
