Hi, I have a B8 170 tdi, when accelerating I get a fairly load whining noise, almost like a super charger..

Is this normal turbo noise for the B8, I had a B7 140 tdi before this car which didn't make this noise, although I know thare are some major differences to the engines.

Hope you guys can put my mind at ease :1zhelp:

Thanks!

Has it always done this or is it a new thing?

I haven't noticed this on mine (although mine is an A6 not an A4, but I have the same engine).

I didn't get the car new, 9 months old 11,000 miles, it has made the noise since I got it.

Was hoping it was a normal 170 noise....

Pity you're not located closer to me, or you could have a go in my car to compare. I reckon it's worth a trip to the dealer to get it checked though.

Thanks for the replies MF, would of been good to do a comparison right enough!

I also have this lovely noise under constant hard acceleration.. Enjoy it fella, its normal for a big turbo'd 170. Better than diesel clatter eh!!

Hm, OK. Must be a quirk based on the engine's installation in the A4 then (or you both have a problem). Neither my A6 nor Mrs F's TT make this noise - both have the TDi 170 CR engine.

I have a B8 143 (from new & chipped) and it has made the supercharger noise from day 1, with or without the chip. If it was the turbo i would expect it to be more of a whistle so can only assume that it is the transmission. Have only covered 4000 miles since September so waiting to see if it dies down as the gearbox beds in.

Have to agree with gibbyd, my Saab sounded like i had a passenger sorting out a box of spanners so much prefer the fake supercharger to the box of spanners.

My 170 A4 does exactly the same, so I dont think it is anything to worry about.

If the A6 (mentioned above) isnt doing it, then I would take that one in ;)

My TDI does it too (from new) and from what I understand from other threads is common to all the 2.0 TDIs as they use the same turbo.

Has the wife been eliminated as the cause of this noise? :biglaugh:

I asked my dealer about a whistle i hear while driving sometimes
It was explained to me that Audi are aware of it and its not a warranty repair.

What it is, is:
expansion of gasses inside something thats got something to do with emissions,
it comes from the front of the car but can sound like inside the cabin dependent on surroundings
typically you hear it when pulling away under load on cold starts.

Its not a warranty repair as it causes no issues and goes within the first 10 mins of the car running.

... well thats what it is in mine. - I've accepted the answer until april, when if i still hear it, it cant be the cold morning thing.
