Strange alarm noise

Hi Guys, Started up my car this morning and sat listening to the radio, started to hear a high pitched noise, thought it was part of the song:biglaugh: it got loader and souned a bit like a car alarm, turned off the radio still hearing it, tuned of the heater fan, still hearing it and getting loader coming from the dash board, got out side and popped the bonnet no noise, got back in the car now loader and I am sure there is some smoke and a burning smell, Turned off the engine still hearing it!!! take key out of ignition, Noise stops. Turned on ignition and start no noise, drive to work no noise???? What could it have been?? any ideas?? :confused:

could actually be the car alarm siren if youve got a facelift?
when the batterys knackered it starts screaming, next time check right hand cubby hole in boot and see if thats where noise is coming from
a new one is a bargain £80+ from audi

It is a 2000 facelift but a saloon, but the noise was definatly coming from the dashboard, I originally thought it might be the heater motor or fan bearings but it continued after I switched the fan off and would not stop until the key was out of the ignition, It has not happened since and everything is working as it should so will have to wait until it happens again:confused:
