turbo problem?

Hi all! Does anybody know why while I'm pressing the pedal to the floor, the engine works fine for 3-4 seconds and then I loose the power? The car is powerless until I stop the engine, then everything is back to normal. Is it safe to drive it like that until I'll find a engine reader to come back with the fault codes?
I have a 1.9 tdi, 1997 passat, 81kw.

You will have fault code 00550 which is usually an over boost code but the early ECU’s did not differentiate between under or over boost. The most likely cause is the turbo vane control unit being full of carbon which normally means removing the turbo so it can be stripped down and cleaned.
