is your tdi a heavy smoker?

03 130tdi tiptronic .expect the black cloud when lead footing it,but seem to constantly be emerging from a smog:(.serviced every year,took the egr valve off couple of months ago,as oil started to leak from it onto manifold,it was really gummed up and black,so a good clean an refit,still seems smoky?had car remapped at chipped uk through this site about 2yrs ago,rolling road test,and a respectable 170 achieved(it had dropped to 122) average 37mpg around town,as its auto i expect that,new cat 2yr ago,old one rattling its taters off!got a 600 mile round trip to do nxt week,worth a tank of redex?strong smoky smell to the smog too,no oil or water being used,which at 150k,cant complain.

Get a code read done. It does sound like the egr is faulty but lots of things can cause excess smoke. Main problem is what is the smoke..Burnt oil or poorly burnt fuel. You could try making sure the egr is shut and then pull off the vacuum pipe and block it. If that cuts down on the smoke you know that the egr is at least not helping and at worse causing the problem.
