Hi Guys
Some information if you don't mind,I have a 2005 Passat Highline 1.9 TDI 130 AWX engine with 82000 miles.
I have heard bad stories on the forum and Google regards oil pump problems and water pump problems on these cars.
Only had the car for 4 months and the cam belt was changed 2000 miles ago before I bought it but when I contacted the garage that did the job to see if they changed the water pump when they changed the belt they said no they didn't I thought this was common sense when the belt was changed.
I am retired and don't use the car every day but don't want some horrendious repair bill because one of these has failed, I would rather spend a few bob now as a safeguard so my question is, would most of you replace these troublesome parts now I would not be asking if I had not read the scary posts on the forums.
By the way love the car it sounds quite sweet at the moment.

The oil pump isn't a problem on your engine and will last for ever with good oil and regular changes. The waterpump is an awkward one. There is no reason your waterpump should fail, but the constant tension on it from the cambelt can and does sometimes lead to premature failure. That is why lots of people suggest having the pump changed with the belt. If you have the pump changed, just in case, that is the same job as the cambelt job. Many garages won't change your waterpump without fitting a new cambelt kit, simply because they do't want aggravation if the belt fails. So do you feel lucky....

Norman, to put your mind at ease somewhat I'll give you my experience. I purchased my 04 TDI highline AWX earlier this year and it had 62k on the clock. I decided immediatley to have the cambelt and water pump changed. When the pump was taken out the mechanic showed it to me. It was completely fine in 100% working order. He rotated the propellor against the cog and there was no play which normally indicates wear. He said it could have lasted until 120k without problems however it's always a good idea to change it while the front of the car is exposed.
I suggest you leave it as it is, and if there are any problems in the future, you should change the pump AND the cambelt at the same time. I hope this is of some help.

Many thanks Dave I will follow your advise because the garage that did the job looked after the car from day one so I am sure if they thought the water pump needed changing they would have done it because this was a leasing car so money was no object.
Great forum this it is nice to have experienced people to talk to you guys are saving a lot of members a lot of money :beerchug:

Better safe than sorry........ I would change both mate mine has been in the garage for 2 and a half months because the water pump broke and took out the timing belt / tensioner etc. Had to have 17 new valves (its the 1.8t) valve guides etc etc came out at £935. I picked the car up last saturday and 2 days ago the oil warning light came on. Stopped straight away and made an angry phone call to the garage they came and picked the car up and have now confirmed it as a faulty oil pump. He is now trying to charge me a further £490 for that!!!!!!!!!! I am arguing he has put the wrong oil in it because the oil was fine when he took it first time so we will see what happens with that... Its a bad problem and although yours is the diesel at least get the pump checked I would hate anyone else to have to go through all this hassle then change the oil and filter with good quality oil every 5000 miles without fail! Hope this helps mate.

the tdi engines dont suffer from oil sludging problems like the 1.8 turbos do. your oil pump has probably failed due to sludge in the sump blocking the strainer, hardly the fault of the garage.have a search on here, theres plenty about it.
