Hey all

I've now picked up my new car. A4 Tfsa Q Sline SE. Great car and lovely to drive apart from one thing. I feel that the gear change is a bit notchy or rough at times - particularly from 2ndto 3rd. I've not driven the car hard at all and if changing normally it's fine. But if i try and speed things up a bit I feel the change is a bit notchy through the gear stick. No crunching or grinding nor does it feel stiff or tight to select any gear.
The gear change is definitely not as nice is it is in my Z4 3.0.

Is the Audi change just that bit different or is there likely to be a problem with the clutch or transmission?

The car is a 2006 with 33000 miles and full audi history so it's not old and it's been serviced properly. I never got the impression that the previous owner was hard on the car and he had it since it was 6months old.

Any thoughts or opinions would be appreciated!!

thanks
Dave

I have the same car on a 57 plate and had the same worry as yourself. I purchased the car new and it has always been the same, I assumed it would get better with more use but I am now on 29,000 miles and it is still the same.

Not sure if this helps but hopefully it puts your mind at ease that it does not appear to be a fault with your car.

I have the two wheel drive version and it seems to be the same, mine has 61,000 with full service history.

I have a 2006 2.0TFSI with 95,000mls and have the same issue (1st to 2nd) until the gearbox is up to temp. I understand that this is not an uncommon Audi scenario

Audi manual gearboxes (for inline engines) are quite heavy duty. I believe they are quite sort after for mid engined kit cars with V8 engines because of their robustness. Unfortunately with this build-in over engineering comes a little comprimise on shift quality. I've yet to drive one that I would call butter-smooth.
I kind of like the 'klonkiness' (is that a real word?)
I dont hink you've anything to worry about.
I changed the gear oil out of mine soon after I bought it (secondhand) just for peace of mind. This is unnecessary as the oil is considered fill for life, but you never know what the previous owner(s) have got up to.

I think the comments about the gearboxes being heavy duty are pretty much on the mark.

I have an 07 plate Avant 140 which has 42k on it from when I bought it new, it has been notchy in 2nd & 3rd since new so I wouldn't worry it is just an idiosyncrasy (if I spelt this right).

Thanks all.

I bought the car in November and then we had the coldest winter for years.
It's a lot smoother now so I think it's been down to the colder weather but the car is still the exact same as it was 6months ago when I bought it so it looks like it's just part of the car and the way it's meant to be.

I've also had someone much more knowledgeable have a shot and they reckoned it was fine.

I was just used to my previous car having a much smoother change!

Thanks again.
