Floppy gear stick

I have a 130 sport passat as some of you may know.

The other day whilst driving to uni the gear stick seemed to go very loose, didn't really pay much attention to it until i found 3rd gear not as easy to find, as if i had to feel for it my self rather than the stick moving into the middle by its self. Now the gear stick is completely floppy to the left which make reverse a :angryfire and it will only pull the stick about 1cm from the right back to the middle, if i take my time while shifting its ok when goin from 5th to 4th i usually end up in 6 or WORST of all crunching 3rd which really can't be good for the gear box.

Remove the gear stick gater and have a good look at the mechanism that connects the gear stick to the gearbox. You may have to unbolt a few bits to get a good look. It could be loose at the gearbox end, but in my experience the problem is usually at the bottom of the gearstick. Good luck
