Hey all,
Looking for some point in the right direction or any common faults.
Every now and then i get "stop motor, oil pressure" warning up on the dash. Only ever comes up now and then and only ever noticed it after ive been driving for a time, doesnt occur straight away. Assuming its low oil pressure? It comes on and stays on until I switch off the engine for an amount of time. As a precaution ive changed the oil and put standard multi grade 10w40 in (not sure what was in there before, 1st oil change since ive had it), ive also changed the oil pressure switch for what it cost.
The car in no way is effected performance wise, still fast as a fast thing, on tic over sounds good (no tappet or bearing noise) the car has done just over 130,000 miles but had regular oil changes etc.
Im currently organising to get the oil pressure tested, although im unsure as to what sort or readings i should be getting?
Thinking it could be a wiring defect that momentarily loses its oil pressure signal and then latches until reset buy engine off or bonnet switch, but oil pressure tests should confirm this?
Ive heard there is a strainer on the oil pickup in the sump that can get blocked and reduce oil flow for hydralic lifters when the engine is working harder? likely? how much work is it to drop off sump to check? how likely?
Also thinking drastically am i looking at an oil pump change? Is this a massve one?
Need advice on most likely cause and any info on past probs anyone may have on similar engines.
All posts will recieve virtual beers.
Cheers:aargh4:

i cant really help you on the fault side, but the oil you put in..... multigrade? 10w40? did you check that the oil you put in your car had a VW rating, eg mine (115 gt tdi PD) uses 505.01 VW spec oil...

To be honest didnt check, but it was doing it before oil change and after so not really thinking it could be oil grade related? Just been chatting to a mate and he seems to think there are two oil pressure switches, one operates above 2000 rpm the other below, and ive only changed one! which one is the question? still digging.

it could be.... if the incorrect oil is being constantly used, it could be making the car run like a bag of spanners and these engines are very sensitive to such things....
id definitley get that oil changed to one which is the correct grade for your car :beerchug:

been reading about the oil pick up gauze in the sump getting dirty on higher milage golfs an audis with the same engine, all pointin to this me thinks, oil pressure tests being done this avo hopefully. Is this a big job to drop the sump? is it worth changing the oil pump anyway? the car is immaculate apart from this issue.

Had exactly the same problem on my 1.8T Estate, the light would come on occasionally on a long run, It turned out to be a blocked pick up pipe so i had the oil pump changed, cost me about £250 all in at local garage, seems this is a common fault
i have exactly the same prob :zx11:, did replacing pump cure the prob

I had the same problem on my Golf 1.8T, found the oil pick up pipe in the sump was blocked, and had a dodgy oil pressure switch, so I replaced the switch, flushed the engine and replaced the oil and filter, and I hav'nt had a proplem since!
If the engine flush dos'nt work, you can try dropping the sump and cleaning out the pick up pipe.

Often the easiest thing to do is order a new pick up pipe, the dealers usually keep them in stock as them getting blocked on the 1.8T is such a problem.

I seem to be having this problem on my golf ... :( (one thing after another)
Does this problem affect the AJM TDI engines? Would it be worth changing the sensor and flusing the oil? or going straight for the oil pick up pipe?
I'd appreciate any input on this :)
