Hi just wondered if anyone can help with info on changing oil cooler on passat estate 1.9 tdi afn engine.Just got a replacement oil cooler from stevens breakers ,cos i am getting oil traces in expansion tank, hope its not head gasket again.I am changing oil/filter this weekend so good time to change cooler as well. How does the cooler fasten to the bracket attatched to the block.Surely i dont have to remove the bracket from the block which seems to be attatched with 3 allen cap screws. It looks like a centre bolt/screw runs through the cooler protudes through onto which filter fits.Does the cooler lock onto the centre bolt ,or am i on the wrong track .Any info would be appreciated before i startthe job

Cheers Joey:confused:

Hi
I think from memory that when you unscrew the oil filter there is a 21 or 22mm nut on the shaft the filter screws onto. Just take that off and the cooler should come off.
Think i might have to get a new cooler as well, wee traces of oil in the header tank. Mine can't be a head gasket cos i've just done it. lol.

Ali.

And you will need a replacement O Ring to seal the cooler against the bracket. I am not sure that fitting a used cooler is a good idea. Regards Peter
