I'm trying to remove my front bumper (PASSAT TDI 2001) and have removed all the screws as given in the Haynes but cannot get it to "release" from the car: do I have to pull, push or lift to remove it from the guides: I'm worried that I might break it?

pull it towards you , if you have all screws removed , did you take the wing liner screws out , if its stubborn have someone palm the edge of bumper nearest the wing arch as you pull . this is the only area really that sits on a plastic runner both sides.

Thanks, it came off fine: I am chasing a small oil leak and wanted access so see if I could find the leak. I think a small amount of oil is getting onto the fan and this spreads it around the area behind the headlight.

Even with the bumper off I cannot see an obvious cause of a leak: I just tightened a pipe clip around the turbo hose but eveything else looks like push fit. Ive just given the area a good wipe and will have a look later to see it the leak shows itself; probably won't without the engine running.

Check the intercooler isnt full of oil , 1 on the right side looking at the car , those pipes attatched to it usually fill with oil and begin to drip , this is lower down though than the fan so im at a loss , defo check all intercooler to turbo pipes though and give them all a good clean out.

Thanks - I'll have a look but space is so tight around that area: I'm having a VW dealer do all three belts on 7/Dec so I might ask them to drain the turbo pipes while the Lock is pulled forward. The price is about £304 including VAT, which is cheaper than my local do everthing garage: expensive for a Timing belt but at least the EMC should be setup correctly with their VW equipment.

Hi
Having same worry as TEEMMERT - all bolts removed but unable to "release the ends of the front bumper from the guides ... " as Mr Haynes might say. Pic in Haynes isnt great but looks like the bumper probably ought to slide forward (ie, normal direction of travel) to disengage from the guide . Noticed that "passat 130 TDi" says pull towards you - I think that that means try to slide bumper forward to front of car (not to pull edge of bumper at right angles to car) . Am I right ?

Thanks

Trevor
PS might need to move car a few yards to somewhere drier tomorrow - any reason why I should nt move it with bumper removed ?

Bang each corner under the wheel arch with the palm of your hand towards the radiator , it will soon pop off the plastic runners, its only road dirt holding it in place if all bolts are removed.

It took a stong yank forward to remove my bumper: I had some sealant around the headlights that may have added to the problem.
