Exhaust Repair Kits

Has anyone used these before? My wife's old Tigra has a blowing back box and I'd rather not pay to get it replaced until we know whether it's going to pass the MOT in a couple of months time. This in mind, I was thinking of getting one of these kits to patch things up in the mean time. Would anyone recommend them?

They're only as good as the person that fits them really! Does the car do a lot of mileage? If it's only used a shopping car, and for local trips then it'll probably keep you going for a bit.

Why is the exhaust blowing, is it a hole or has the pipe totally gone all the way round?; if the latter a 'patch kit' probably won't solve it anyway.

I'd probably wait until a few days before your MOT (if its not too loud!) and stick a patch kit on then. Depending on how well sealed it is it may cause your car to fail on emissions anyway, if not then see how the rest of the MOT progresses and make a decision from there.

A backbox from a backstreet garage(or similiar) shouldn't be more than £55 and it's 2 x 13mm bolts, an exhaust clamp and some dirty hands to fit :beerchug:

Thanks for your suggestions gentlemen. The whole is in the back box itself and wasn't too big when I last looked at it, though from the noise and the smell the wife reported from it this morning it sounds like it's got bigger. The car is a low milage (coming up to 60,000 miles one a R-reg) so I might get away with it.

If it's on the backbox and you know someone with a welder for less than a tenner you could get it all fixed for a long time :)

If the hole is on the pipework though then I'd look into replacing the bits tbh

I'd forget a repair kit and get it welded, personally.

by the time youve removed it to weld it, unless your welding it yourself, i would just stick another one on. if you can live with it until theres only 30 days on the mot, then get it tested and make a decision from there. at least then youve got a month to decide.

Lager can cut into suitable size patch.
Allocate gun gum to hole.
Rivet lager can patch over hole, having drilled small holes for the rivets.
Worked for best part of two years on my old 16V golf.

(I'm too posh to drink lager from cans now - bottles only)

Welding exshausts is almost a complete waste of time, you introduce a metal of differing ferous properties that then rots the exshaust worst in my opinnion

If you can fit one yourself, im sure you will be able to buy a back box for around £30 - £40.

I know a local comapny to me which sells at trade price.
