View Full Version : Made in Britain
Picked up a cheap plastic Thomas the Tank Engine potty a while ago to start the twins potty training.
Imagine my surprise tonight when I spotted the label and saw "Made in England" emblazened on it.
I was quite astonished, I thought that all cheap tat like that has been resigned to coming from the far east.
I'm glad I unwittingly "Bought British!". Unfortunatly it's one of the few British made items in the house I can lay my hands on though. :(
Thomas Crapper would have been proud however! :D

Excuse me taking this clearly tongue in cheek thread to a serious level :P
I work for a fairly large kids toys and educational supplier and we source ~80% of our stock from the Far East.
You would not believe how stringent quality standards are and the hoops you have to jump through are unreal.
You can imagine how many times I roll my eyes when we get a customer complaint, expressing their discontent at the products origin....
If only people would pay the higher rrp, we could stick to using good old British cottage suppliers.
As for the potty... ironic that one of the few things British made is something you take a poo in. Coincidence? :o

Obviously that is only for one twin.

I was being totally sincere. I was honestly suprised that it was made in the UK. Regardless of the item in question, it was refreshing to see a product with those words on it.
Did any one see the series that Dom Jolly recently hosted? He basically removed all non UK made items from his home and then had to replace each with something made on these shores. I can't remember if assembled in the UK counted, I don't think so because there was one item he rejected.
He struggled with loads of things like a telly and computer but he was able to get plenty of soap. His kids weren't too chuffed about the Xbox/Playstation/Nintendo situation. :D
He did scoot about in a Morgan though.

I can still clearly remember 'Lesney Products Made in England' on the bottom of my Matchbox cars when I was a kid.
I deliberately bought a Hotpoint washer, drier & fridge freezer because they're made in Britian. Well, that & the fact they were in a cool graphite colour & styled much better than everything else that we'd seen! Yes they're functional machines, but you still have to look at them every day! All 3 have been whirring away perfectly for the last few years, so all this talk that we don't put things together very well here is rubbish.

at least if something is made here, you know its been done by someone old enough to be at work, rather than school, who is paid a reasonable wage and works in acceptable conditions for a set number of hours each day.

Also with electrical appliances, consider Lec fridges. they are made in the uk. Actually just outside brighton. I know this as I had a school trip there number of years ago.

How much of those Hotpoint machines were actually made in England/Britain.
I imagine most of the electrics and electronics and motors were made out of the country.
Does 'made' in England just mean 'assembled'.

It seems that a few companies use "assembled" as "made" to get around import tax. Whatever the name of the Chinese company that are now making MG's at Longbridge spring to mind. Well, they would if I could remember their name.

Dunno, I know that helped keep someone on this island with an income & their life on track though, and that was very important to me.

Must admit I'm partial to a pint of McKewans Export, but not 100% certain that's made in Scotland anymore, because the the same brewery are making Newcastle Brown at Burton on Trent.

Apparently that's because it's got a little alcohol in it.
It's only 0.05% and is listed as 'Flavourings' but it certainly kicks the hangover into touch.
Used to be a secret ingredient until certain religions started complaining.
