View Full Version : Very Urgent Help Required!
Hi all,
On my '94 MK3 Golf TD, one of the brake bleed nipple bolts has sheered off, leaving about a cm of thread poking out. I need to remove this to put a new bleed nipple in to bleed the brakes for the MOT. Is there a wayI can safely remove it or do I need to buy a new caliper?
The only way I'd say given the time you've got is to get some grips on it and have a go.
You might be lucky, you might not, it's a 50/50 thing and a horrible position to be in. You've nothing to loose by having a go.
Good luck.
Tried it, I couldn't get the grips to get a firm hold and it just kept slipping off. I considered drilling part way into the bolt and seeing if I could hammer an allen key into it, or maybe drilling so far and using some kind of screw extractor with a left hand thread to get it out, but I wouldn't want to damage the actual caliper. I think I'll have to bite the bullet and go for a new caliper, should be able to get one at the scrappers, or maybe new for that matter.
If I replace one, should I replace the other caliper aswell or would it be ok having one new and one old?

Drilling may introduce metal particles into the caliper which is a pretty bad idea.
If you go to the scrapyard, bear in mind the the Mk3 used several different brands of braking systems. Make sure you get an exact match.
You don't need to change both calipers if the other one is OK.
Update on the sitation:
I've ordered a new caliper at the cost of £60. Ok so I could of probably got it alot cheaper at the scrap yard, but it will be hell of alot easier with a new one. Ordered some new caliper bolts too from a very good place called Volkservice here in Blackpool. Hopefully it'll be the exact one, the guy had previously ordered me new brake pads, which come in a wide variety of shapes, and they were spot on match for my car. Hopefully I should have the old girl back on the road pretty soon.
