i noticed that the stop start feature of the 2010 models have the added bonus of being an anti-stall mechanism.
If you happen to stall your car, just go back on the clutch and it restarts automatically... Great.
- You need to be wearing your seatbelt for this to work.

Yes, I have noticed that too.

I am still frequently annoyed by its tendency to start when it is in one of the Stop/Start cycles though

You stop at traffic lights with a known long Red interval
Into neutral, lift the clutch
Engine stops
Feeling of self-satisfaction at this pretence at planet-saving
A minute later it spontaneously starts for no apparent reason
Feeling of annoyance because you know that the light won't change for another minute

I know there is a complex set of rules, but I wish it would just stay stopped until you press the clutch.
This is typically with AirCon off, lights off, HRW off etc etc i.e. no obvious reason why it starts.

Is it just me or are others finding this too?

Nope - not had mine restart unexpectedly. I'm sure theres a good reason and it's better for it to start than run down the battery, make you too warm/cool etc etc

I think this is something they've got right.

The antistall did confuse me when I stalled as whilst it was doing it I was preparing to start it. It started but then within a second of two it decided it was fine to invoke the Stop. I didn't know what was going on. Now I've learnt to just trust it and it's fine. :D

Still pi55es me off that they didn't put the Start/Stop overide button where the Hill Assist button is.....unless they will at some point allow both to work together

Afternoon

First post for me!

I have had my 2010MY A42.0TDI (143) S-Line Exc for 5 weeks now, all good.

I have experienced the exactly same issues as juniperz. I stay in a rural area of Scotland and tend not to activate the start stop very often. When I do have a green moment, there is no consistancy to what kick starts the car. I have had it happen when the car is fully warmed up. I stopped at the traffic lights, cars stops 20-30 seconds later the car starts....... no idea.

Another thing I have noticed is that if you active the stop at lights, I was in a long cue of traffic on a down hill section. To further my geen feel good factor I let the car coast down the hill to the lights........ it started.

On a separate point has anybody tried putting the hand brake on at anything apart from stopped. I did it by mistake at between 5-10mph. It swtched itself back off!

Welcome to the forum.
That has also happened to me, but it is at least described in the manual:
"Engine cuts in automatically:

The vehicle starts to roll (e.g. on a hill)
The interior temperature deviates from the air conditioner setting
The windscreen is being defrosted
The brake pedal is pressed several times in succession
The battery charge drops to an insufficient level
The power consumption is high "

The one that must keep catching me is the interior temperature. Typically this is set to 21-22°C with AC off. But if the engine cuts back in after only 30 seconds, then the function is useless. The tolerance needs to be greater. As the weather cools into winter, the cabin temperature is going to drop even faster. I am quite happy to feel a bit chilly for a couple of minutes at a red traffic light.

Would any of you VCDS/VAG-COM users with a 2010MY 2.0 manual gearbox care to take a look and see if it could be made to be a bit less jumpy?? TIA

VCDS is a tool that lets you interrogate the modules. There's many modules and each has a load of long hexadecimal strings. Each hex byte is made up of bits which turn things on and on or are used in combination with other settings.

It's simply not a case of plugging it in and having a quick look.

After all a hex code of 5C for example could mean a load of different things. It doesn't necessarily tell you what bits mean. To be honest I don't know how they've worked out what they have so far!

OK, thanks Scotty. All this talk of switching on the near-side mirror dip, the needle sweep and the locking beep - you all make it sound so easy

It's very easy following the instructions that others have written ;)
