View Full Version : Diagnosis codes, 05 B7 2.0TFSIQ
The check engine light on my 05 B7 2.TFSI Q came on a couple of weeks ago. I had the dealer do a diagnosis on it. They found a few codes concerning fuel pressure, deleted them and wasn't able to recall the faults. However a couple of days later the light came on again. After I filled up the tank the light disappeared, but came back on halfway through the same tank, and it's stayed on for a few days now. I had a local shop do a diagnosis this morning, and they gave me the following trouble codes:
P0507 Idle Control System RPM higher Than Expected
P0441 Evaporative Emission Control System Incorrect Purge flow
P310B Low Pressure Fuel regulation: Fuel Pressure Outside Specification
P2187 System Too Lean at Idle, Bank 1
The car feels normal. Any ideas?
The check engine light came back on today.
Did a new read out yesteday, with a system that gives a bit more information.
Fault code Description Status
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
08583 --- Bank 1; System too Lean at Idle --------------------------------------------- 004 No Signal/Communication
08825 --- Leak in Air Intake System ----------------------------------------------------- 002 Lower Limit Exceeded
12555 --- Low Pressure Fuel regulation: Fuel Pressure Outside Specification -- 008 Implausible Signal
01287 --- Idle Control System RPM: Higher than Expected. ------------------------- 001 Upeer Limit Exceeded
It looks to me as the first error is due to some sensor or something being dead/not connected, and the other three errors are just a consequence of the first error.
1. I'm used to splitting a V-engine in bank 1 and 2, but since this is an R4, does Bank 1 mean cyl 1 an 2 (starting at the front)?
2. What does "No signal/communication" on the first error mean? Are we talking lambda sensor? Coils? Other sensors?

Check the Air intake leak first,as it can put other faults up too.Check all Induction hoses, manifolds etc.

Bank 1 refers to all 4 cylinders, there is no bank 2 but the fault code has to state which bank the fault is on.
You definitely need to solve whatever the air leak is as that would likely cause your lean running condition and possibly the idle control problem too.
Thanks guys. I had my car at LongLife service yesterday, and they also booked half a day to look at the engine lamp problem. They did a lot of readouts/printouts (laarge bunch of papers), and found out that the engine didn't get the air it needed, which fooled the ECU into believing there were other problems with the engine. They opened the air box and concluded that the air filter was so clogged up the engine didn't manage to suck through enough air at idle. They had never seen anything like it, and wondered where I'd been driving.. :aargh4:
Well, they replaced it and did a new readout on the air mass meter, and everything apparantly looked good. They're certain this was the problem. I am not as the lamp has been off for a couple of days everytime I've zeroed the faults, but time will show. So far so good. Fingers crossed. ;)

It just shows you, check the simple things first, before you go to get your VAG COM.!!!! It aint always electrical. Hope its finally fixed though!
It isn't. :(
As expected; The light came back on the day after (thursday) ironically enough just when passing by the dealer on my way home from work!
They're taking it back in tomorrow.

The error codes mention too lean at idle - that's an excess of air! I would suggest that it's a leak in a vacuum pipe somewhere. Once you've solved that then you have a better chance of solving the others.
I took a short look under the hood the other day, and wooha, it isn't easy to get an overview of the pipes/hoses on the turbo motor in the tight little engine bay. I've done my share of repairs and builds the past ten years, but that didn't help me. I am still confused...
Just spoke with the mechanic working on the car. He says there's no intake leaks. He had already checked that twice. They're using some sort of ethanol spray while they're monitoring the oxygen/lambda sensors. No change at all.
He's suspecting the electric fuel pump...
He ended up changing a fuel pressure sensor. However it didn't work. The MIL lit up again last night. :(
Any suggestions?
Also, we did more research on the cars history, and found out that the camshaft chain drive has been replaced TWO times!? The last time it was because of noises - first time is unknown. Timing BELT was changed just before 90k miles.

Try looking for an air leak AFTER the MAF. Also, do you still get the fuel errors?
You may be in need of a new fuel filter or CAM follower which is starving your engine of fuel.

On the cylinder head there is a breather valve which connects to the inlet manifold, within the breather valve there is a flap and this breaks away and partials blocks the valve so inlet manifold vacuum pressure drops causing similar symptoms to yours

Are you talking about the pressure regulator valve?

Yes that's the bugger, I would also add check the fuel rail pressure at the rail regulator via mvb for deviation as the lambda fault can also be caused by fuel pressure or un burnt burnt fuel.

Yeah, those are a common fault. OP - You can click the picture if you'd like to know more, IE location and what exactly it does.

i had the pcv fail so iv gone BSH pcv fix but went stage 2 with the catch can sorted it same faults as op
Thanks for good advices guys. I actually replaced that valve on tuesday, and had the codes reset wednesday morning. So now I'm driving around with my fingers crossed...
Mine had the Mann + hummel rev. C valve, which has an o-ring problem. I couldn't find the O-ring at all in mine, it's probably somewhere in the headers?? The flap wasn't broken, but it didn't seem to seal completely. I replaced it with the L rev which is the last one. On the third day of driving after the reset now, the MIL usually comes on in 1-3 days after reseting the codes. Fingers crossed...
BTW, I must say I'm a bit disappointed with my dealer not figuring out this problem earlier. It was actually listed in the common failures thingie from VAG, as one of two reasons for the MIL to come on in the 2.0T. When I had a part number to research on the net, I also found out this has been thoroughly discussed on forums all over the net.
Also, the cam chain drive hasn't been replaced two times. The dealer misread the service history.
The MIL (lamp) came back on today while my girlfriend was reversing the car. :(
Just like the other times it's come on at low speeds or sitting idle. Will have to read codes again, but I'm guessing they're the same. :(
Now I'm completely lost.. and so is the dealer. :(

Don't get discouraged, it may be unrelated codes! Give it a scan and get back to us!
Sorry for the slow response. I appreciate the interest! :)
The dealer wants my car for a week or so and have the Audi tech drive the car as his "private" car to and from work and other daily stuff, while logging data as he goes, and then involve the official norwegian VAG importer and VAG in Germany. I'm sure they would be able to solve the problem together, and in a week, but it sounds like an expensive solution to me. They weren't willing to do another "off record" readout either, to see if the fault codes had changed, so I took the car to a friend with Autoboss V30, he's read out codes before, but for some reason it didn't work this time. I was tired of asking around and ordered VAG-COM instead, that's why it's taken time. I need to get it solved to get my beauty sleep again! :D
Sitting in the car as we speak. I'm (so far) actually very impressed with VAG-COM, especially compared to low cost solutions for BMW (Carsoft).
There's five faults this time, it's been four all the time before (at least as far as I know).

The first fault also notes "MIL ON" (I've never seen that from the other diagnosis systems?), but I'm guessing it could still be a consequence of another fault?
Any suggestions?
I'd also like to mention:
Lately I've noticed a slight rpm drop at idle every now and then after driving.
I haven't had a four cyl. petrol car in quite some time (several years), and my other daily driver are a straight six which you can't feel in the car at idle. I know they can't be compared vibration wise, but I still believe the Audi is a bit more rough at idle than it should be. I can feel quite a lot of vibration in the car, but the rpm is stable, other than the noticeable drop which happens once in a while.

Your fuel problems sound like classic cam follower issues that we have here in the US. Has your dealer checked the follower?
Wouldn't that cause fuel cuts at high revs?
And no, I'm pretty sure they haven't checked it. However the cam chain drive was replaced about a year ago. They replaced the following parts:
06F 198 088 D Repset
06D 103 469 M Cylinder head cover
06F 109 217 A Chain tensioner
06D 109 229 B Camshaft timing chain
Don't know what the repset includes, but I'm guessing seals etc., not the cam follower...
Also I've been driving the car like 100 miles the last two days. The vibrations are quite noticeable now, more than before I'm sure. Also there's like a 200-300 rpm drop after idling a few seconds before it comes back up to normal just below the 800 rpm mark...

Depending on how bad it is!
You can pop it out yourself and look, it'll take about 5 minutes and be real obvious if it is bad.
I read up on the TSB around the net and saw people mentioning 1-2 hours, 5 mins sounds better. :) Found a DIY for a GTI: http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3750088
I will definitely check mine.

It certainly isn't 5 mins.
Getting access to the torx head '****-bolt' (as I call it) or better known as the banjo-bolt in the pump return line. Audi knew this would be an **** to get to and replaced it with a clipped rubber hose in 2007.
Getting at the feed pipe is a game as well - you can only turn it 1/12th of a turn at a time due to the lack of space to wield a spanner.
Apart from that its a breeze :p

The dealer measured fuel pressure and then opened up just to make sure everything looks good, and it does. No noticeable wear at all...
We had an unhappy meeting with a XC90 on the slippery roads these days so it's in for some painting++ and will be for a week or two. Will get it back to the dealer for the MIL problem after that. :zx11:

Here is a fantastic DIY for the cam follower, with pictures. You'll see everything you need to do, as well as a side by side comparison of a good cam follower vs. a bad cam follower. You can check your follower without replacing BTW. http://freepdfhosting.com/8791e81dac.pdf

Thanks,
If it is the follower then I will be surprised as it's been very well looked after and it's under 30k - surely Audi will have known this is a problem and made a fix for it no?
Had some advice from Shark_90 (Thanks) but still haven't gotten any further, cannot find any type of leak anywhere. Does anyone have a diagram of the vacuum pipes and the circuit so I can find and check each one individually?
Reading these codes does it still point to the cam follower?

Sorry for the slow response - nothing new from Norway. Same old same old, lamp still on, dealer still has no clue what so ever. :(
They involved Audi Germany when they last had the car a few days before christmas, but I haven't heard anything back from them yet, and decided to use the car during the winter (we've had a lot of snow the last three months), as that's why we bought a quattro, and then hand it over to them again sometime in april when the snow goes. And also tell them I don't want to see the car again before the problem is fixed. If it's more than £850 or so I can hopefully use my insurance (engine and drivetrain)... I'm so sick and tired of over half a year with this idiotic lamp problem.
Edit: And according to the dealer the cam follower is perfectly fine on my car. They both measured the pressure and did a visual check...

Hi, No I haven't got to find this elusive problem, still been told it is some sort of vacuum pipe leak or something similar. I cleared the fault and it came back other day. The problem is, it's not my main car so doesn't get used much at all, Still, it does need sorting but I am trying to sort out the flickering Xenon lights issue 1st otherwise I can't even drive it evenings reducing the use of it even further.
The other day I drove it and all of a sudden at idling the whole car was rocking side to side with what seems like a misfire then it disappeared!.
I wonder if someone has a diagram of the vacuum system so I can go through it to see and check all the pipes.
Regards

Well.. I replaced the N80 valve (and the connecting hose as specified in ETKA) myself (10 minute job and 50 quid), which the dealer has checked several times, both with diagnosis and manually, and I haven't had the MIL come back on for a couple of weeks now. Haven't noticed the idle rpm drop anymore either.
I can't believe I've had the car at the dealer five times (++) for this...
Thanks for all the help guys!

Did you reset the MIL or did it go out itself?
Have you got a picture of the N80 valve and the hose please? (ETKA diagram will do)
I had reset my MIL and it has lasted over 5 weeks, not that I currently drive it that much though, but the rough idle still appears occasionally.
Keeping fingers crossed for you Pal.

Actually dreamt the god damn MIL came back on tonight... after posting here.
Anyway, I don't have a picture, sorry, I just went to the dealer and said I needed the N80 valve, and they said ETKA said I also had to order the hose which I did.
If you take off the engine cover and stand on the cars left side you will see it located almost at the rear of the engine under the intake, a couple of inches in diameter and a couple of inches long with about 1/2 inch connecting hoses in both ends. The rear hose runs to the coal canister in the front right wheel arch and from there to the gas tank. You only need to swap a ~10 inch bit of hose. I didn't figure out why it needed to be replaced, but I was too tired of this to care and just replaced it as ETKA said.
You will have to reset the MIL afterwards. I bought VAG-COM a while ago. Works great.

Hey all! I think this thread has been quiet for a while but I wouldn't mind adding my some extra comments...
I've been having some problems with my 2.0TFSI quattro spec ed over the last month or two. Called the RAC out a while back and the technician thinks it was the oxygen sensors. Haven't really done anything about it to be honest, I just wanted to see how often the light came on.
Today I had a enough. Engine management light back on, been on now for a couple of weeks.I called them out again, really just to read the codes. The technician, Kev his name was, was brilliant! He wanted to find the cause of the fault, visually checked parts and pipes under the bonnet, checked sensors using his laptop and the vagcom software (or the RAC equivalent). I really want one of those laptops by the way!!!
Fault codes were:
P0441 Evaporating emissions control system
P0171 System too lean Bank 1
P2187 System too lean at idle
P0507 Idle speed control
P0441 Tank breather system flow fate faulty... most of those mentioned earlier on in this thread.
Kev the RAC man seemed to think it was the purge valve (the same part as the pic a few pages back) causing the issue. He was fairly confident that the oxygen sensors were working - he could see them operating on his laptop - about 0.5volt at idle (if that's right). When he rev'd the car the voltage increased and then dropped back down gradually. He said it may be worth changing the purge valve as it's probably only around £30ish. So i'll give audi a call in the morning to see if they have one in stock.
I really want the vagcom software + lead to reset lights and read codes.... but not sure if i should spend the money as I'm not sure i would really understand the information it provides"
Grr... are you still having issues?

Ok... I called Cardiff Audi yesterday to try and order a new purge valve / pressure valve (as per the pic on either page 2 or 3 of this thread). The did not have a clue what I was talking about. I described the part, told them where it was on the engine and the guy could not find it on his screen. He said it may be called something else... cant remember what... then he said... "Oh, can't be that because they're not fitted on your car." He was fairly helpful in a way and kept looking for the part on his drawing. But he failed to find it. Looks like i'll have to take the car to Audi and physically show them the part. Doubt they'll have it in stock so will then involve a second trip to pick it up when in stock.
Has anyone else had these symptoms / fault codes? I gave the Audi parts guy some of the fault codes, as mentioned in my previous post, and he did not recognise them. He said they are not Audi codes. I thought Audi use codes such as P0441, P2187, etc. If I buy a vagcom / vcds lead will my codes (assuming that provides P#### numbers) match Audi's codes?

I have never heard anyone saying Audi reads different codes to Vag Com. It might be worth asking/seeking advice on that front from Ross-Tech (makers of Vag Com).
It could be the dealership using this as an excuse to extract money out of you for another scan?!
Attached is a DTC codes list.
