Just had Lonlife service completed by my local VW dealer on my 2005 2.0TDI.

When I've got into the car I pressed the spanner to see what the service indicator shows (I've only had the car 8 nmonths and this is my first service).

Now I was expecting to see 20,000 miles or 744 days. My BMW is similar and can do up to 15,000 miles or 2 years and it basically counts down from 15k depending on how you drive it.

It shows 9400 miles, Is this right? does it not start moving until it gets to this point? I do 90% motorway at a constant 78MPH (for fuel savings ;)) and expect to get 18,000 miles from it if the other users of this forum are correct!

Looking through the service book pre my ownership and it was being done every 18k.

Am I worrying over nothing or does this need resetting?

Give it a couple of days to sort it self out, if no change the dealer could have set it to fixed servicing

No. it should show just slightly less than 18000. I would get it checked. i think it takes about 100 miles though to get the right values to do the calc

A longlife service can be due at 9800 miles, it all depends on how you drive it - The management system wont have a clue when it's due untill you've put a good couple of thousand miles on it - Drive it and check after a couple of thousand miles, you'll probably find it still says 9800 miles untill next service

I dispute that, I just changed my oil and within 200 miles it was right, i have my own cable to do the setup.

Models using flexible service intervals may show "---" as values for the time/distance to the next service in the instrument cluster. This is not an error. The system requires a certain time/distance to calibrate itself to show meaningful values, usually this takes about 300 miles or 500 km

This is from the Ross-Tech site

So as advised get it checked ;)

So what would happen if you did the first 1000 miles on motorway (which is ideal for LL servicing) then drove like a **** untill the service is due? Would you expect it to say initially 'Service due in 18000' then the mileage till service drop rapidly?

OK here's the update:

Drove it for 2 days appx 100 miles and the indicator has dropped by 100 miles. I have driven as usual 90% motorway and has been driven VERY conservatevly due to road works e.g. i'm getting 59MPG!

Rang the dealer and they have said to me, A longlife service has been completed and when we reset the indicator VAG.COM gives us 3 options the first 2 are for older Passats and the final 1 is the one we have set. It is correct that it shows 9400 miles as VW say you should bring the car back in midway through the length of the interval so that the fluid levels and consumables can be checked e.g. tyres etc... as 2 years can be a long time for this sort of stuff.

The 'health check' and reset is free of charge, other than any work that may need doing.

Now i'm no car expert but I smell a rather large pile of steaming ...... here. I think they just wan't to get people back in and low and behold they find something that needs correcting on the car?!

Anyway I read another thread which give a reset method after 9400 miles for another 9400 miles, so I think I'm just gonna reset it and go to an indie next time.

Any comments or thoughts on the update from the dealer?

don't do that, Longlife monitors the soot content and other things and you can get up to 18K but that not guaranteed.

Get a good independent or anyone with Vag.com to read the car and see whats going on.

As for the health check that is every 2 years or sooner if indicated. They are spinning a line

Never heard of this before, and you'd think that if the rules had been changed they would have told you.

Can't really see how tyres would need checked more frequently as the car gets older rather than when it's a bit newer.

I've got a service next week at 92,000, so it'll be interesting to see if I get this treatment as well.

Perhaps it's just the individual dealer doing it themselves to churn up a bit more work, and pre-empt your visit to a tyre depot, or whatever.
