Had my golf just under a week and have discovered that the coming home lights need to be manually activated via the headlight flasher everytime you want the lights to stay on after door opening/locking....why have they made it manual?
On the mkV its automatic just like the leaving home function, however VW seem to have made the coming home function manual on the mk6...can anyone explain why?

Because folk were fed up with being told "Hoy mate, you've left your lights on"
So vw decided to give folk the option, from what i've read.

Seems obvious to me once you realise the implications of the function. After all, unless you live on some vast estate with a long dark drive, just how many times would you want the the function on?

It's a PITA as you have to remember to do it - although it's useful when approaching the car and the lights come on when you unlock it.
I might actually read/check the manual later...

Perhaps you do live in a place where there are no street lights and therefore when you park your car, you would like some illumination after you leave your car, ergo you actuate the function you have been provided with. What is the problem?

surely the best option would be to have an automatic coming home function....then the ability to turn it off and in this setting you can activate it manually?

Another way to look at it is that leaving the lights on for 30-60seconds highlights to any low life in the area that the car is being left. Maybe OK to light your driveway tot he front door, but not so great in a multistorey car park.

Yes, that makes sense as well. However car manufacturers seem to be damned if they do and damned if they don't. They cannot win, can they?

true true but its just slightly annoying because everything else is perfect! (and they had it automatic on the mkV)

I agree, I would much rather have it with the automatic coming home function without having to flash your full beam (which looks stupid) everytime you get out of the car! The Mk5 had the function (along with a lot of other manufacturers audi etc), so why cant the Mk6! Is this auto coming home lights available on ANY Mk6 Golf? Or are they all the same?

Just how many times do you need that function on? Obviously it depends where you live and work whether you need illumination after leaving your car. Going to your car, parked on a pitch black driveway or car park is quite a different matter, though.

At the moment, i'm leaving for work when its dark and get home when its dark so would be nice. And mainly the operation of it on the MK5 was more for convenience really, I think it was a great feature that they have changed.
