View Full Version : '98 1400 16v Golf misfiring / lumpy running at idle

Hi everyone - first post here!

My father-in-law has a 1998 / S-plate 1.4 16v Golf that has recently started to run really rough at idle.

The problem initially started - so he tells me - when the plastic covering on the camshaft sprockets shattered and ruined the belt, despite the whole kit being less than 2 years old.

He took the car back to the garage - a VAG specialist in Wakefield - who did the cambelt kit, and the guy replaced it saying "never seen that happen before".

Ever since, the car has had what can only be described as a lumpy idle - almost like it's hunting, or misfiring, and a soft irregular popping can be heard from the exhaust. The idle speed as indicated on the tacho can be seen to vary by about 50 - 100revs.

My father-in-law has been back and forth to this place who have had the car on the diagnostic machine and not found any faults but something is clearly not as it should - prior to this the engine was as smooth as you like with a rock-steady idle. They've checked, cleaned and changed a few bits but nothing seems to have had much effect.

From cold, the car starts on the button and idles fine for the first minute or two, then starts hunting. Driving on throttle - such as accelerating or high-speed cruise on the motorway - and it's fine.

Light throttle / low engine speed - such as tickling it along in fourth at thirty - and at idle when warm, and it is lumpy.

I couldn't tell you exactly what has been changed or checked exactly as I'm posting this up from memory and I can't get hold of the old fart - but from what I understand the following has been done:

- Compression tested. Results OK, consistent and within specification
- Plugs cleaned and gapped
- HT leads checked for breakdown and resistance, results OK.
- No faults apparently reported via onboard diagnostics
- Camshaft timing checked and confirmed OK.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the Lambda / HEGO sensor is to blame but but the garage state this has been checked and works - and the car passed its MOT last month in this state so it can't be too far out of whack....

They are at a loss to explain the problem (which doesn't suggest they are much of a VAG specialist!) and have suggested changing the throttle body assembly as a last resort.

So - over to you guys. What do you think? Is the 1400 engine known for poor idle problems? Anything that commonly gives up that could cause this?

If you need me to provide more info I will where I can but the car isn't here with me so it may take a few days.

Thanks in advance!

Jim

There is no such thing as a Golf 3 1.4 16v, it is a Golf 4. I am surprised that no codes are stored with those symptoms. If the lambda sensor was dead, it would come up as a code. What is the engine type code?

Apologies - it's a 1998 S-plater 1.4. That's as much as I can tell you. The Father in Law told me it was a 16v engine which - to be honest - it looked like on a quick glance. Or are the 8-valvers twin-cam units too?

I'm told there were no fault codes reported - but I have my suspicions that the VAG specialist the old man takes it to is nothing more than an enthusiastic amateur - especially given I would have thought someone in the trade specialising in VW and Audi's would have had this problem licked weeks ago.

I did suggest that he take the car to a main dealer and pay to have it put on their diagnostic equipment, but he refused saying the dealer was expensive. You can't help some people! ;)

In terms of the engine code, whereabouts would I find this? On the chassis / VIN plate or is it stamped onto the block somewhere?

Excuse the ignorance - I can rebuild my own car practically by touch, but the old man's VW is a complete unknown!

I am in Nottingham just in case he decides that he wants someone else to take a look. I have sent you a personal message with my email so if you give me the registration number I can tell you exactly what the car is.

Thanks for the offer. I've passed it up to the father-in-law. He's in wakefield and not often down this way, but if he can't get it sorted he said he'll see if he can get down for you to take a look if you don't mind.

I'll email the registration of the car to you a bit later on.

From what I've been told tonight, the garage is talking about changing the throttle assembly despite having cleaned it already. They have even replaced something at the rear of the car close to the fuel tank. He didn't say fuel filter, but it was something to do with getting fumes out of the tank, possibly a purge valve or tank vent assembly?

Anyway, thanks for your help - it is appreciated!

Crasher tells me via eMail that this is a Golf4 1.4 16v with an AHW engine.

( mods - when I posted, I was going on the registration year of the car. if I have stuck this post in the wrong section inadvertently, please feel free to move it )
