I've been playing with the idea of going it alone for a while. I've got my company and database set up so its ready to go.

Now I just need the balls to do it

That sounds rubbish, feel for you., why don't you give the business a go, if you've got it setup. it can't get any worst and the rewards will be higher in the long run;)

I'm thinking about quality of life too - I have a proper office set up in one of the spare bedrooms and I love the thought of being able to work as I want.

And to make a semi decent living I only need to place one person a month.

I feel for you mate. I'm in the same predicament (spelling) as you, although I confess, I was mde redundant on the 7th of August (the day before my birthday! :zx11:) and previous to that was the September before.
I however, haven't got the back up of potenially setting up my own business.
I would love to set up my own business, if I were you, I would make the enquiries required to find out the costs of setting yours up, and if the figures are good, do it!

Hope it all goes well for you. :beerchug:

Self employment isn't quite the pot of gold everyone thinks.

It has its merits of course, but it's not all sweetness and light

Combover, sorry to hear it's happened again - good luck with the venture, any advice I can give, please just ask (PM if you'd prefer)

Bad luck...I got told I was going on 24th June, my last day is 30th September (day before my birthday). Fortunately working for a big bank, I have only had to do one day a week since, on full pay. Not as good as it sounds when you have to look for another job, which is a full time job in itself. As for going it alone, fortune fancies the brave, I take it you are in the recruitment industry?

That sounds incredibly annoying and frustrating. All the best in whatever you choose to do.

I also have to emphasise being self-employed isn't always rosy. I am self employed, and have been since 1992 (bar 2 years between 2007 and earlier this year) in 2 different fields.

The thing people have to realise when you're self employed, is that it's not a 9 to 5 job. It's a 24/7 job. At 5pm you don't down your tools, go home and leave all the troubles behind. They actually follow you, if you don't put them right nobody else will, and you can't always have the attitude of "I'll do it tomorrow".

It gets worse when you hire staff.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Recruitment is a different type of industry to most others. The good Recruiters (like me I hope!!) tend to work 7.30am - 8pm anyway, so dropping tools at 5 has never really been my thing!

I'm looking at other non recruitment jobs too - to work along side my business

Sorry to hear about your redundancy combover

also I agree with mycarsavw on this, being self employed gives you lots of control over how and when you work but there are lots of things that you are required to do that your employer did, such as National Insurance and Tax etc.
You are required to register with a plethora of government agencies none of which communicate with each other several of which will ask you to supply the same information.
You have to supply certain documents exactly at the appointed time on pain of fines, interest not to mention the time taken to fill it all in.
By all means have a go mate, good luck to you, hope it works out but just be aware how much red tape is involved with running your own business before you commit yourself.

Sorry to hear that mate, I haven' been around much of recent, hence only just come across this. It must be an uphill battle trying to place people in jobs when unemployment is still rising! At least it should be low overheads if you have a spare room & you don't need any expensive kit, you've got your database set up.
I know what you mean about quality of life etc though. Some people thrive on work & they've got to keep going till they're at the top.
I just want to get by in life comfortably & enjoy it with the people I care about. This constant striving for more is a load of 80's Thatcher/Reagan **** that's led us into this whole mess.
Follow your heart but don't let it rule your head!!

Thanks all

Well, a quick update: I've take a job in Telecoms which I really didn't want, working for a company with an awful reputation! However, with Christmas on the way, I'm looking to take a couple of 'Seasonal' jobs. You know the sort, John Lewis, M&S, Next etc and looking to work at lease 50 hours a week between them. Then having spoken to my Father in Law, he is going to help me set up my business with a 'start trading date' of 01/04/10!

Nice one! It should be pretty good not having anyone breathing down your neck! Only problem is if you don't do it, nobody else will! I admire anyone with the drive to set up for themselves in anything.
Window cleaners are the unsung heroes of self-employment in my book, they work long & hard come rain or shine.
This bum-prodding recession should officially be over by the time you set up & more jobs popping up for you to place peeps in. Hope your business flourishes, you deserve it.
If I'm not scribbling buildings again by then you'll be hearing from me again.

Well I am 3 weeks into my 4 week contract with Royal Mail and I have to say that it is great fun. Arrive at 5.45am, ipod on, process mail. home by 2pm!! I'm in line for a Perm contract too which would work well with the setting up of the business.

But hey, you can tell that there is a Union in place there - 2 x 42inch LCD TVs, library, 2 x lounge, 1 x reading room, complementary personal radios for when you are working if you want them, games room, leather settees around the office, subsidised canteens.

No wonder stamps are so expensive!
