Hi,

I've got a 97 Golf CL 1.9 TD UMWELT with 150k on the clock. This morning there was a nice big patch of oil on the drive. I looked under the car and nothing from the sump. Then I noticed a lot of oil around the coolent resevoir, I opened it up and loads of oil in there.

I checked the oil level and it is now really low.

Any ideas on what it is and how to fix?

Many thanks

Rich

First guess would be head gasket, but I would expect this to also cause overheating.
Any dodgy temperature readings lately?

Thanks for the reply. No dodgy temp at the mo, how would I check the head gasket?

I would say its the oil cooler, which you will find between the oil filter and engine. it has water running through it and they are renowned to corrode. this then mixes the oil with the coolant ;)

Id second that ive had a few oil coolers go on different cars and this is usually the outcome :)

Is it worth taking this on myself, or would it be easier to take to a garage?

Depends how competent you are really lol.If you have a Haynes manual you cant really go wrong!Just be careful undoing and retighteneing the pipes as they are fairly suseptable to snap :)If this picture puts you off then take it to a garage lol

That looks different to what I'm bidding on on ebay:

Am I bidding on the correct part?

Right I finaly got around to fitting it, but the had to cut through one of the hoses to get it off and then I find that the hosesthat came with the replace ment cooler were the wrong size!

Anyone know an on-line part supplier that would sell the hoses?

Any one got any ideas?

I had to buy the one between the cooler and the water pump for my MK1 Golf, because it was rotten, and the only place i could get it was the dealer.;)
