Fitting door guards - best way to clean surface?

I've bought a set of door guards (rubbing strips) for my new Golf. These just stick onto the door with self-adhesive strips. It looks like the car got a good waxing before I collected it, so I'm guessing I should try to strip the wax off in the area where the strips stick on. What's the easiest way to do this? Is this one of those rare occasions where a dilute solution of washing-up liquid would be appropriate? :nervous:

How did you get on with your door guards? Have they stuck on OK? Also, did you use the VW ones & if so, as they only sell one type will this work just as well on both 3-door and 5-door variants and if so how, please?

Yes I bought the VW ones: part number 5K0 071 329, £68.20 inc. VAT.

It would appear they are only suitable for the 5-door Golf (though this isn't obvious from the accessories price list). The instruction leaflet also shows Golf estate and Jetta.
