Hi just joined the forum so 2nd post in as many minutes!

My 55A4 2.0 TDI avant has become a poor starter, to get a decent start you need to leave the glow plug light go out plus about 10 seconds, if you dont it shudders big style. My friendly fitter told me it is probably the air flow meter and no the glow plugs, and to start by changing that. it has 106k on it and not sure what to do?

It is not a smooth runner by any means, and on tick over it shudders every 4 secodns or so, no real power loss though?

Any ideas?

First of all, get a fault code read done, it reduces guess work. A failed Air Mass Meter (AMM) will cause terrible running problems if it is affecting the starting. My money would be on it having a coolant temp sender code stored.

Thanks for that. The guy who services my car checked and there are no fault codes showing. Audi changed this I think at abou4 42k as the engine management light came on and car was shocking to drive. It has never been a smooth runner since to be honest and now the starting is deteriating. Do you still think it is still cooler temp related?

The AMM’s are very prone to failure but I don’t do anything (where relevant) without a code read first. If you do buy a new AMM, only buy one from your Audi main dealer, nowhere else. They only cost a few pounds more and are 99% reliable off the shelf unlike non genuine units plus they have a two year guarantee.
