Does anyone know if the (very basic) standard spec A4 take as long to build as the S-trim etc?
I believe they simply build in batches and build times are essentially the same for each car. Modern production lines can build various models and specifications all at the same time. I know, for example, that the BMW Mini plant builds right- and left-hand drive cars at the same time and I would expect the new A4 line to be the same. Then it's s simply a case of bolting on the required extras from the pars bin as the car moves along the line.
So it simply depends on whether your dealer (or Audi UK) has filled up all of it's allotted slots in a particular batch as to when the build week is. After that, each car takes the same time on the line. There is a delay in getting the cars to the UK as they transported over in batches when trucks are full. From there they sit in a holding pen for a while and then get transported to the dealer.
And 4 weeks from build to you is usually about right.
Then again, I could be talking complete ******** :(
John
PS Everything is set to pick mine up on Monday, fingers crossed it's as specified ........

ALL A4's are built as ordered. No cars other than press cars etc are built without orders. i.e. it's an order for an individual person or it's a car that a franchise have ordered for stock. All cars go down the same line and take the same time (generally) with the exception of some cars with Exclusive options which obviously can take more time.
If it's an S-line then they have S-line parts brought to the line by the robots. If it's an S4 then they bring the V6 etc. Nothing special nothing different.
In fact when the old A3 was finishing and the new one starting I witness both on the same line at the same time. Impressive stuff.
TBH more impressive is the paint shop where the cars go through on one line and come out different colours from one set of robot arms. It looks weird watching different colours come out of the same robots!

When I worked for Ford from 1978-1988 they worked that way then, so no reason to suspect that the world has gone backwards since then. Cars of various specs followed each other down the line with computer systems ensuring that the parts ordering and sequencing had everything arriving in the correct order (99.9% of the time!). I should know - I was involved in the computer systems behind/controlling the processes and parts ordering.
[Note the Ford cars in my history!]

Did we learn nothing from The Terminator movie franchise?
Mine was build week 35, arrived on Tyneside yesterday, delivery on Tuesday.
The sales rep reckons that they are being quoted March delivery for orders placed now.

gets sent by train to the docks. Sometimes it goes via the Netherlands and gets shipped via Amsterdam or even Belgium. There is huge compound where both VW and Audi sit. Usually 3 days later they get shipped across. Lorry picks them up and drives them to another big compound. (when you see them on the M25!) Think there is one in Milton Keynes and another in Grimsby. Then the dealers collection truck goes and picks them up and drops them at the dealers. Sometimes they go to ANOTHER compound if the dealer is in a very large group. Gets picked up/dropped off. Given the PDI check (allow 2 days for this) and prepped. Stickers, covers and paint need to be sorted and of course the relevant paperwork needs to be completed for the car. Registration, tax...although this is usually done during the PDI stages.
Looking at 2 weeks, pos even 1 and half weeks. Depends how quick the dealer gets it turned around and how many get put through. Although this can be easily delayed if there is a prob with shipping. Weather, strikes, delayed back log. I got to see my car when it only just arrived. Inside was a mess! Coverings, paper, fingerprints everywhere. Then the owner guide and PDI check book all wrapped up and thrown on the floor. And stickers all over it...it was covered like a christmas present :D
However, you can ring audi UK with the commission number (get this off the dealer or its on the order form) and they can track it like a UPS parcel for you.

Emden is the port in Europe before shipping - Compounds in the UK are Grimsby and Sherness.
Seen the one in Grimsby its Big
Went in the dealer yesterday the lead times are growing with alot of products being quoted a delivery time of March or April - Is the Recession over???

you know Zeebrugger in Belgium is the other port. Emden is just one of the ports they use. There is another port, but can't remember. Also one of Audi's largest plants is in Brussels. I know its not Germany, I think the A3 gets assembled there now. Also they are making another plant in Brussels for the A1. :beerchug:

The only info I can get out of my fleet department is that the car was ordered 28th August. and the only indication I can get is Leasplan have put an anticipated delivery date of the 30th October. I make that 9 weeks.

Mine came through Leaseplan. The best thing to do is find out which dealer has been nominated and then contact them. You get a much better idea from the dealer than leaseplan. Mine was a week 36 build and was order 14 July and delivered 28 September through Coventry Audi.

Did you specify the optional 60mm raised suspension or does it still have the transport chocks in place? ;)

The extra height lets you straddle the rutts without removing vital elements of the car.

Not sure Scotty will have to check.
The cars come into another dealership (where I took the pic) before being transported out to the garage I purchased from. No call from anyone yet to say it has arrived.
I wonder how long before they tell me its here.
