EGR Valve issue?

Hi:

Polo 1.4 twist - 2004.

I've read the error code P0402 - Exhaust Gas Recirc.Flow Excessive Detected.

Is this a common issue? Is it a case of replacing the £130 EGR valve?

Took the valve off - 5 min job.

It looked very clean, just a very light coating of soot. Sprayed it liberally with carb cleaner.

While it was off of the car it connected it up and turned the ignition on - no movement or anything.

Reset the error code and took it for a run (5 mls).

It doesn't feel any different but the error light hasn't come back on. Will take it for a longer run tomorrow - fingers crossed
