Yes, they need a protector don't they?
I looked into this; the SS one looked as if it would mark and even dent too easily. I ended up buying a clear plastic film job from VW, which you apply wet. Have to say I'm disappointed with it; after 2 years it's lifted in one place allowing dirt to get trapped underneath.
That black plastic one looks just the job though, probably tough enough to resist dents and scratches and quite discrete.

I got the black plastic one from a VW dealer for around £30.
Works V well with our big dog getting in and out the boot.

I bought a stainless steel one off ebay in October but its started to stain. If you are after a sticky one and you dont mind the colour being slightly off Id recommend helicopter tape. Extremely duarable and strong. Just looks a bit yellow on the wifes silver car.

The stainless steel one looks similar to mine but I didn't get it from them.
It's noticeable that they're both for the estate. Mine's a saloon so that's probably the reason mine stuck out over the edge of the bumper before I cut it.
I'm quite happy with it, but a saloon doesn't encourage carrying big/heavy loads like the estate, so perhaps my experience isn't typical. However, because of the way it's ridged, I'd be surprised if it dented.

Cheers Jonesy. Im not sure if plastic will be better. Golf clubs and dog constantly in and out. Ive seen how much mine marks but then its not the best quality.
