Hello,
which one of the A4 (B5,6, 7 or 8) do you think is the most reliable car? which engine?
Should I consider that newest generation are always the most reliable as technology evolves usually for the best?
thanks

Errr I would say the older models are probably more reliable especially the 1.9TDI diesels.
There was a thread on here not long ago with someone with a 2.0TDI wanting to do an engine swap as the original engine was knackered. This was in a B7!! :aargh4:
Wait and see what the experts on here have to say on the matter though.

B5 1.9TDi 110 if you don't mind the (lack of) performance.

B5 1.9TDi 110 if you don't mind the (lack of) performance. ok, but if I mind the lack of performance? :D
3.0TDI? or 2.0TDI? I don't think I need so much BHP that the 3.0TDI is offering, but the whole "machine" 3.0TDI quattro sounds a very nice car...

3.0TDi over 2.0TDi IMO.

I would recomend a b5 passat 1.9 tdi with the AFN/AVG 110Bhp engine. Fit a decent tuning box on it and it will feel right and still return 50Mpg when taken easy. 110Bhp is plenty enough from a diesel of that era ! The a4 b5 is too small inside and it really lacks rear leg room. The new b6/b7 are just good looking but wont last eons !

Surely nothing with a turbo (therefore no diesels!) as they always go pop sooner or later. A large, unstressed NA petrol would get my vote - so one of the V6's. I ran a passat 4WD 2.8V6 to over 150k miles (including the odd trackday and a lot of towing of the race car I then had) and it was very reliable indeed. I sold it (for the pittance you get for high-miles cars) three years ago and it is still on the road, a dealer just got in touch to check the mileage. Since any sort of half-decent failure would have made it a write-off in that time, it has obviously still behaved... As have all my Alfa V6's. Indeed the A4 2.0T I have now is my first 4-pot in a long time, and in that regard I'm not loving it.
