Tapping noise from gearbox

There is a tapping (rattling) noise coming from my MK7 Passat 1.9 TDI. When I press the clutch , the noise stops, When it releae noise starts again. There is no noise when the gear is engaged. Please can anyone helps to figure it out, the cause, repaiing cost etc.

It could be the dual mass flywheel or a fault with the clutch slave cylinder/ release fork mechanism. Either way the gearbox will probably have to come off to investigate. Probably looking at a couple of hundred pounds to investigate.

my 2.0tdi had a rattle/knocking noise when clutch pedal not pushed down and on idle when cold. turned out to be the fly wheel the cost was around £900 good thing it was under wty.
