Poor MPG

Just bought an 02 Passat Estate 1.9TDI(100) two weeks ago.
1st tankfull I got 500miles @ 40.9mpg. Pretty dissapointed considering I was taking it real easy. 400 miles was urban and 100 miles motorway sitting at 70mph. Should I expect more?
Today sitting at 60mph over 30miles only managed 44mpg.

I fitted 18in alloys just afte purchasing car - could this have much effect of MPG?

No effect on your true MPG, but the wheels will have an effect on speedo & tripmeter so your cars computer will show an incorrect reading for your MPG. You will need a good mathmatician to work it out for you. It may only be a small difference??

Did you take the mpg from the trip or did you fill tank and then calculate mpg from the litres used over 500m? That is the only way to see if trip computer is accurate. My 130 estate usually gives 48 -50 mpg on motorway at 70mph
