I've a 2001 Caravelle, that I purchased 2nd hand in 2005. The model has a Gamma stereo with a 6 cd changer. Recently it has not been holding it's volume i.e. it will automatically turn down the volume to nothing no matter how many times I try to turn it up.
No matter, I've never really liked it anyway!

I want a replacement, but one that will accommodate mp3/wma etc files, preferably from a USB mass storage device rather than an ipod or similar.

So, what's new in VW audio equipment?

Is there a single DIN unit that plays mp3 files, with a USB port in the rear to which I could attach a portable HDD?

I've looked at other 'brands' for example the Kenwood KDC-W7544U that has rear USB access, and coupling it with an Iomerge Prestige 320Gb portable HDD (as it requires no external power source) so I can take all my music with me.

Anyone else doing something like this?

I used a Kenwood headunit with that feature in my last car (Clio 172) with an 8GB USB Key and it was a fantastic solution. I'd get around 40/50 albums on there, and seeing as you can shuffle whole albums or single tracks from the entire storage of the device, so it's a good way to listen to stuff you might normally skip. It also means that you've got access to hundreds of albums without having to fumble for CDs. I'll be fitting one into my B5 Passat fairly shortly I'd guess.

The only thing to watch with a portable HDD is that the headunit will supply enough power. I believe that 3.3V is sent down a direct (i.e. not via an unpowered hub) USB connection which is what the drive you've mentioned would need to power it. I don't know if the Kenwood headunits output enough power to power a drive.

Thanks Cap'n
That's probably what I'll go with - you do get the option of a second usb cable to double up on the power.

However, just for reference, is there a VW own stereo that would do the same job as the Kenwood? i.e. with rear usb access?

I'm not sure if VW make a unit that will go straight in with USB Connectivity, but, I've just found this:

If you can pick up a replacement Gamma, perhaps this is an option?

Might be worth looking at this http://jvcmobile.co.uk/product.php?pr=180
I'm considering replacing the HU in my Passat with one, seems to have pretty good reviews and can apparently run a HDD from the rear USB.

Are you getting rid of the 6 disc?
