Hi,

I just wondered if you could help me or give me some advice.

I have recently bought a 1.8 t, its got 103000 on the clock and runs perfectly no issues so far touchwood.

Now i was looking through my old paper work it came with.

now 10k (93k) ago it had a oil change by a vw specialist and on the receipt it says they used 15w/40 semi, but i was under the impression 10w/40 was suppose to be used??

now the last owner said he had change the oil after that as well, at 95k. now i assume he used the correct grade as he was a different owner then.

would 15W/40 have had any negative effect on the engine?

vw garage says it wouldnt harm it in anyway.

p.s I will be getting the oil changed to be on the safe side.

many thanks

Ant

Hi,

The 15w/40 would not have harmed the engine.

But for the future, anything fully synthetic around 0w, 5w, 10w - 30, 40 is fine as long as it meets the VW specifications. This would give better protection when starting the car in the really cold winter temperatures.

In fact the best oil for the 1.8T is the fully synthetic Long Life oil. Look for the VW503.00 (older) or VW504.00.

The non Long Life oil to use is VW502.00 spec.
