Choking tdi at 1800 - 2300 RPM.

I have a problem with my 2001 passat 1.9 TDI (130 AVF).
It is choking and giving lots of smoke from the exhaust for around 2-3 seconds, at 1800 - 2300 RPM, on any gear? Anyone have an idea what that might be?

Could be one of the PD units playing up.You should have a fault code read
