hello all,

im new to VW's, and would really like to buy a 51/01 to 53/03 plate Passat 1.9 tdi sport.

i was just wondering if anyone could give me some info and details on that model, as to what to look out.

does anything go wrong on them, as in common faults (like clutches/flywheels, rear wheel bearing etc)

are they expensive common problems?

and what are the engines like? how often do the cambelts need changing? is there anything that goes wrong alot on the engine?

also, what are the engines like when they are remapped? what sort of power/torque increase could i see from it, and do you notice a big difference in performance?

many thanks,
Dave

The 1.9TDi comes in lots of different outputs. The one to go for is the 130PS model. These map to around 165bhp and you would see a massive difference in performance and driveability.

Things to look out for are leaks that cause the passenger footwell to be wet (there is an expensive electronic module underneath the carpet which can be damaged by water), and I can't really think of anything else off the top of my head! Try to get one with full history as you really want one that's had the correct oil used in it as they are pretty sensitive to it.

Good luck with the search :beerchug:

PD130 cambelt change interval every 60k or 4 years whichever comes first.

You could also check the alternator pulley bearing, a common problem across all TDIs (I've had to change it on my A6 and T5 van). To check it, park up, lift the bonnet and turn the steering wheel to full lock in either direction. If the poly V belt starts flapping or you hear horrible squeeks and/or rattles then it needs replacing. Not hugely expensive though, £60 part from the dealer plus fitting.

Also check the front suspension for knocks & creaks, it's a complicated 5 link system, and they do tend to wear.

And the radiator can corrode after about 80k and need replacing.

But, they are great cars and if looked after can do huge miles, 200k plus.

HTH :D

juddering/slipping rattling clutches aswell due to the dual mass flywheel. These arent cheap to replace, but can be a good haggling point
