I've just had the following quote from my main dealer for my 2006 2.0tdi 140 SE saloon.
I'd like to have them do the work as they've done all the servicing since the car was new, however I'm not paying over the odds.
Anybody have a view on what I should offer them as a counter offer?

Recently had my belt done.
Plymouth VW wanted - £300.00 labour. £138.39 parts. £504.15 in total(Inc VAT).
I went with main dealer in Cornwall who were cheaper. I can't understand the invoice to pick out the cost, but I paid in total £753.87 for cambelt, water pump, long life service, air con service with refresh, brake fluid service. Parts - £313.89, labour £341.65
By the looks of things there is a £40 surcharge for the return of your old water pump.
The quote you have is probably quite competitive. It beats my local dealer. Are there any other dealers within a reasonable distance? I travelled 60 miles, but it was worth the day out!

I've just been quoted £422 for a cambelt change from my VW dealer on my 2.0 TDI 140. This doesn't include the water pump but does include labour.
Just out of interest as it's having a cambelt what mileage has it done ?. My dealer seems to give a different time/mileage every time I ask them, and as mine now has 135k on it, it must be time for the second belt change at the next service.

Sounds like it's not too unreasonable then! I might see if I can get them to throw in a brake fluid change for free, it'll be due in December anyway.
P.S Mileage is 79k, brakes are starting to get a bit soggy, and front discs have a 3mm lip on them now. Had rear discs replaced at 56k due to corrosion.

Had mine done for £320.00 inc water pump..brake fluid service and aircon service £90.00..front pads at £100.00..at my local main dealer sinclair vw..but the sinclair group only cover Wales I think..
The service chap said it is one price of £298.00 for all model not inc v6..did haggle for water pump and pads mind..and they had a offer at the time for brake fluid and aircon..but the cam belt is there standard price.

Its 4 years/60k these days. My handbook (April '06) says 6 years/80k which really pleased me when I bought the car as I don't usually keep them beyond 70k which translates to less than 6 years for me. I really thought I was gonna avoid those cambelt change costs.

Thanks for your info gamichea. I e-mailed my dealer this afternoon and he's e-mailed back stating it's 75k or 4 years. I've obviously done this just to cover myself in case there's an issue later on, so I now have it in black and white, and they can't deny they recommended any other time/distance.

Got VW to pricematch a local independant.
'I can confirm that we will match this price of £225.00 + 36.74 for a water
pump and anti freeze replenishment all are parts are covered by a two year warranty. A total price including V.A.T £301.01'
Brake fluid was just under £50 from memory. Had to get it done by VW close to work, as the VW garage close to home wasn't interested in pricematching that low.

Peter Cooper Southampton gave me the pricematch quote against a local Southampton business. My local garage in Sussex wasn't having any of it.

I have booked a service at VW dealer -
Cam belt change, brake fluid, long life service, air con + refresh for £600. Others quoted me from £700 to £800 for the same job.

My dealer quoted £400 for the belt and pump, and in view of other prices on this thread and in previous threads £500 seems on the steep side, particularly in the current economic climate, unless you're in central London or another pricey area.

Update:
I've accepted their quote of £750 for cambelt kit, water pump, front discs and pads, but have asked them to also include a new set of centre caps for my 17" alloys and do a brake fluid change for the same price. I believe the centre caps would ordinarily cost me £20 and the brake fluid change (it would be due in Dec anyway) would cost £50.
Not an amazingly cheap deal, but I don't think it's extortionate and I feel safer having the main dealer doing things related to brakes.
Incidentally, regarding the brakes, I've done 80k miles and they're feeling a bit spongy, certainly not as sharp as they used to be. Rear pads and discs were replaced recently. It's on original front discs and newish pads. No indication of fluid loss (i.e. air in the system). I've put it down to the front discs getting quite a big lip and getting a bit thin.
Anyone else noticed brakes getting noticeably less responsive as the mileage mounts?

If you replace the brake hoses it will probably sharpen the pedal feel. They have a bit more "give" in them as they age.

Hd the cambelt etc done yesterday. Took the opportunity to ask about mileage intervals for the cambelt. The dealer confirmed that my 55 plate 2.0tdi 140 is supposed to have the cambelt done at 80k, and he confirmed that the next one won't now be due until 160k.
He pointed to the number 6 in the middle of my chassis number indicating my cambelt change was at 80k. He said if that digit was 5 or below then the cambelt change is before 80k (either 60k or alarmingly even 40k (on the 1.4TSI?)), seems it depends on the engine model.

My 56 reg 2.0 TDi 170ps is coming up to 60k so I asked my local dealer and VW UK when my car is due the cambelt change. Both have come back with 95K or 4 years.
'I have checked with our technical team against this chassis and the cambelt interval is 95,000 miles or 4 years'
Is the 170ps that different to the 140ps?
