alarm horn needs a new siren especially if alarm keeps sounding for no reason
V71 is the air recirc flap check operation in measuring blocks/data to see if moving
try resetteing basics of flap motors and if fault reoccurs or doesnt clear a new actuator is reqd

Thats easy for you to say, but how do I actually do it?

alarm siren about £70
siren should be either in battery tray not to bad to do just tight or in boot on n/s very tight
n71 is actuator on the n/s of dash fitted to the side of the heater box you can just about change these in situ but are easier to do if you remove dash not a nice job cant remember cost of part

Have you changed an actuator without taking the dash out? please do a sticky on how this is possible, there will be many happy Passat owners using it!

its a bitch but ive used a right angle screwdriver the type that fits on another and you turn it
with an adaptor and a 7/8mm short socket
the tricky bit is realigning to gear in flap

Hi mate,
I am not having any problems with the alarm sounding for any reason. With regard to checking the flap motor, exactly how do I do that, I have a genuine version of VAG-COM, but not sure exactly how it all works.

Is there a ticking sound coming from near the glovebox when you press the recirculation button, and does it stop when you press it again?

No ticking, just fault codes thrown up by VAG-COM, but I have noticed that the speed of the fan motor fluctuates from fast to slow. Could this be a faulty climatronic unit????
I have seen something in another post about someone changing the V71 motor only to find it was a faulty climatronic unit, they got a re-con unit for £75.00.
any advice would be appreciated.

The V71 on the Passat is at the back of the heater and is a dash out job.
The V71 on the Golf / Bora platform is on the side.
I had a faulty V71 on my old Golf which I fixed...just. I even did a how-to on the UKMKIV's forum.
The V71 was also knackered on the Passat I had, after investigating a fix, I came to the conclusion that it was not worth it.

If you remove the pollen filter (under the black perforated plastic cover at the back of engine compartment) You can see the V71 flap. The flap is used to recirculate air or bring in fresh air depending on position.
It is a very common problem with VW & Audi etc... You can manually move it with a stick via the pollen filter aperture and leave it on fresh. That's what many people do.
The horn siren near the battery is a common problem due to water ingress. I replaced mine with a brand new one to no avail and was told there is also somewhere in the drivers footwell where the wiring/connectors fail. So I don't bother with it seeing as the car is 8 years old and everyone ignores alarms anyway.
