I have been having problems with my door lock on my 99 Passat(1.8 petrol).

The boot lock will not lock with the central lcoking or with the key. When you blip the remote all the doors lock but the boot remains open. There is no problem closing the boot it just wont lock.

Having read around this forum I decided to replace the microswitch that fits inside the door lock. I have managed to get to the old switch but cannot work out how to take it out.

Can anyone tell me the easiest way to replace the switch?

Thanks:confused:

if its the boot thats got the problem its probably the white actuator fitted to the inside with 2 wires
its about 40mmx30mmx15mm and as a small pash rod check operation with boot open also check the clip at the end

That happened to me.
I took it to a car shop who fixed it by using another servo/actuator, bypassing the original one, mounting it in a different place and a bit of rewiring.
The original one is still in situ.
It cost me £80.......about £12 for the new servo and the rest was labour...
But at least the boot now locks.
I did ask for advice in the local VW dealer, but they wanted the car booked in to check it etc................and I could see ££££££ signs lighting up :D
Now I know what the problem was, I could have bought the servo from VW (about £25 I think it was) and done it myself.........:o

Thanks Guys,

I managed to replace the microswitch in the lock. All you need to do is undo the two nuts that hold the boot lock onto the boot. Once this is off it is quite easy to prise of the plastic covering to get at the switch inside.

The only problem is that changing this had no effect!! This obviously was not the fault!

Help needed please!!

Having had a closer look it appears to be the metal rod that brings the lock catch down and up that is not working.

Which part of the lock electronics controls this element? I have noticed the white box that was mentioned in a previous post. Do I need to replace this?

Thanks:confused:

Cheers Towcestervag,

How do I check if it is working or seized!! - Apologies if this appears to be a strange question!

Yep, my guess is the actuator.........the unit with the 'hooked' rod coming out of it............I think they are about £25 from a VW garage/parts.
I made the mistake of buying a new boot lock, which was not needed.......still, at least I have a spare brand new one just in case...:D

if you remove boot inner cover and remove the white actuator
operate the central locking and the actuator should move in and out on lock/unlock
if it doesnt see if you can operate it manually if it doesnt move its seized

Thanks Guys,

Where exactly isthe actuator? Do you have any pics I am not sure I can locate it ?

I have attached a picture is it the white box? In which case how do you take it out? I have had a look at it does not look as if it can be removed.

I have attached a picture below of what I think is the actuator.

Thanks:confused:

Thanks,

How do you remove this then?

you remove it by taking the complete assy of of the boot and its held in by 2 small torq bolts

Thanks for the info.

I must be missing something,I have undone the two bolts but the lock will not budge. Is there any screws that may be hidden?

Do I need to adjust the lock in anyway to get it off the boot like
you do with normal house locks?

Just spent 2 hours taking off every nut I could see anywhere on the boot but the lock is firmly adhered to the boot!!:aargh4:

Has anyone out there managed to do this?

I have removed all the screws that I can see but there is something else keeping the lock firmly fixed.

I am not sure if anyone has every managed to do this other that at a garage as I have trawled through the internet and no one has detailed this.

Help please!!

Before removing the actuator,i would suggest, removing the connector, and with a diode test lamp, check if there is power to the actuator. However, to remove the assembly, there is a spring clip you must unclip

Kenney,

Are you saying that I should check whether a fuse has gone first.

If so where and which number is the fuse that controls the power to the actuator?

Thanks

The ccu under the passenger seat controls boot central locking. If you put a test light on the wire to the solenoid and then activate the central locking you should see the light come on. If it comes on you know you have power and the fault must be the solenoid.

With the diode test lamp the polarity should change when you lock and unlock, this will tell you if the signals from the CCU are ok.

No just a plain 6 mm socket

FYI

the tool to remove the two bolts holding the lock on is called a multi-spline, not sure if its a #6 or #8.

I've got the same problem with my 2002 A6 and cannot find information anywhere about how to remove the actuator. It looks like the whole lock assembly must be removed. I undid the two 10mm nuts holding the mechanism in place but cannot see how to detach the connection to the external boot release. Any ideas?..............anyone?

You have to replace the locking mechanism, I picked mine up from eBay for about £20 delivered.

Search for the part number as they are interchangeable with other vags.

I'll also just point out, you will keep your current barrel, so don't worry about having a different key for the boot! Also take this opportunity to check/replace the water jet pipe... I used some washer jet pipe available for all good car spares supplier.
