My car (2.5tdi 180) started making a repetetive hissing noise earlier today which seemed to speed and slow down in line with my speed, but it carried on in idle. to me it sounds like one of two things....
1) It almost sounds as though one injector is blocked or blowing air (i know that doesn't make sense but this is definitely most like what it sounds like)
or
2) Possibly something catching on a belt, which would make more sense, but i can't see anything.
The noise is coming from the top of the engine but i can't work out exactly where as the diesel clatter drowns it out as i get closer.
The car drives 100% and when i got back home the hissing had nearly stopped. It's still there but very hard to hear. No fault codes found
Any ideas welcome,

Update - I found out what the noise was, it was my tyres! A thin strip on the inside had worn down to the metal mesh so it was tapping in sync with the speed i was going. The hissing at idle was probably air coming out! Can't believe I missed it! but 95% of the tyres were almost brand new and the bit that was worn was completely hidden in the arches.
Quite scary as when they went fully I only noticed the one. It wasn't until I got to the tyre place that i saw the state of the second one as even on full lock it was hidden. :aargh4:
Turns out the camber and toe was all misaligned at the back and the front was over compensating. So i've not got 2 new front tyres, camber and toe "sorted" but now there's a slight vibration i let off the accelerator at 60mph upwards.
So a few questions........
1. What's the likely cause of the camber issue? Is it just something that works its way out due to age and needs checking as a matter of maintenence?
2. The wear was focused on a 1" strip around the tyre i still have a feeling there might be something else. Anything to look out for?
3. Any ideas what the vibrations are? I didn't notice this until the camber was sorted.
4. Why is this car such a money pit?!
