I've just come back to the VW fold (last VW was a Scirocco....loved it) and got a 1.9 TDi Passat with a 51 plate (20.02.02) from a local dealer.
Question is.....my rear mud guards/flaps scrape on bumps with 4 up and shopping in boot.
I put it down to the previous owner dragging round a blasted caravan, since it has a tow bar and a caravan owners club sticker on the windscreen.
But, I spoke to a chap today who has an 03 estate and he says his guards scrape on speed bumps too, so I am wondering if it is just the design and VW forgot to allow a bit more clearance between the bottom of the guards and the road.............:D
When I mentioned this to the dealer he just said there is nothing wrong with the suspension.........just cut 3 inches off the mud guards......:D

Is this a common 'fault' with these cars ?

Many thanks.

Mine does the same when going over bumps with 4 in the car etc. Just think that they havent allowed enough clearance for the mud guards

Yep, mine is the same, mine's a sport, so even lower!. If i got to do a long journey fully loaded, i use a pair of spring assisters, they stop the mudflaps scraping on bumpy roads & also keep the car level.;)

Very many thanks for the replies......................so I am not alone then :D
I am starting to love my car, but...........after 4 weeks a bolt that holds on a bracket with the drive belt pulleys sheared off ! I was driving along to work one morning and 'bing bong' a message came up that the alternator was u/s.....along with the power steering. The car is damn heavy with no PS.
Unfortunately I bought the car from a local car lot on the ind. estate where I work, and it took them 3 weeks to source a new bracket + bolt !!
Not amused.
Then a couple of weeks later the actuator in the boot failed, and I couldn't lock it..............another £80 to get that fixed !.
I also notice a puddle of water in the passenger foot well after rain..............not always though, and not always after jet washing (Karcher) the car at work. Just some times.............perhaps a blocked drain off ?

Apart from that, I do love it really, especially the fuel economy.............I just have to fill her up..............about £43-45 a month and that's it.
I don't do a lot of mileage living on the Isle of Wight, just to and fro to work week days and some running about at weekends, so it is only about 350 miles or so a month....a lot of stop start, especially this time of year with holiday makers all over the place....:D
She would probably do about 5-6 weeks before I am down to the 'red'.

Am I happy with it ?......ummmm yess ! :D

the water in the foot well is a coman fault its probably a blocked drain under the battery.
get it sorted asap or the repair bill could right your car off if left long enough

ow ye my flaps drag on the floor with just 2 in it let alone speed bumps
