I've been reading these forums and scratching my head a lot as to why my climate control was not blowing cold air.
I back checked all the points including the pressure switch on compressor. Got a pressure test at a garage and manually felt all pipes for cold etc etc. all working fine.
I took pollen filter off and got recirc flap to down position and noticed that there was no movement from the fan(no surprises there!)
I was about to go in under the dash to check wiring then decided to try to rotate the fan with a long probe(!)It rotated but not freely. tapped the spindle and it did move freely. Result. Started car up again fan started to rotate, one more tap, with a long steel ruler this time, to the spindle centre. Full speed ahead!!!
Can't expalin unless the spindle has rounded off the splines or maybe a build up of Snurge over the years!!
Hope it helps at least one person avoid the whole dashboard out job!!!

On my Passat. The circular fan looks like a hamster wheel and is located next to the recirculation flap. If you take off the pollen filter housing and then remove the pollen filter, you will see it. Try getting someone to operate the recirc switch just in case the flap is in the 'upwards' position as this will not allow you to see it.

No mate, sorry, we seem to have wires crossed. The blower MOTOR is fine, all electrics to it are working etc. The FAN is the circular bladed item CONNECTED to the MOTOR and it was somehow not been driven by the MOTOR. I suspect that the SPINDLE was not engaging correctly. e.g. sheared or worn SPLINES
