View Full Version : AMI not connecting to IPOD
I have just collected my A4 and the first thing I did was buy a cable for the AMI to IPOD connection. Unfortunately it isn't working. When I connect the IPOD it powers on but the AMI says that the device is not connected, should I be setting anything up or should this work straight away. The IPOD is a 4th gen nano.
Thanks
David
There is nothing to setup. Plug it in and go.
I'm sure the ami is supposed to be shipped with the iPod cable these days. so if your brought one from your dealer you have been had.

Hi...
Have you tried rebooting your iPod. when connected there should be an Audi logo on the front of the iPod. On your MMI you should be on Media. As for buying a cable, nowadays all A4's come with two cables from new. One is a iPod and the other is a USB cable.
Martin
Thanks for the replies. The A4 is not new it is a May 2008 model and did not come with any cables for the AMI. I asked the dealer at the time and he said that they didn't come with cables, then again he also said that the A4 didn't have a first aid kit but it does.
When I connect the IPOD, the IPOD powers on but I don't see an Audi logo on it and the MMI thinks it is not connected. I guess either the cable or the AMI is faulty.

I had the very same problem when I collected my car from the dealer the other month. It seems that there are two iPod connector leads - one for 3G iPods and one for earlier versions. They look identical apart from a coloured band around the AMI plug in end.
It sounds as though you have the wrong lead.
Sorry I can't help with part numbers etc - I have yet to get the workshop disks with the part numbers in.
With the correct cable it works straight away.

Ok, this is still not working. I have the cable with the blue band (4F0051510K) and a 4th generation IPOD Nano.
From looking at the info on compatability it looks like a 4th gen nano is not surported, is that correct?
Thanks

When I go to the download page there is no file to download. Has it been moved?
David
Should I have got the IPOD and USB cables with the car? The dealer says no and the cables are another £60. It seems daft that you don't get the cables, after all you wouldn't buy a TV and then find the mains cable is extra!

It depends when you bought. I think it was around April when they started coming with the car.

Sorry but there are two documnets on that page and neither is a bin file. One tells you the media players tested and the other is instructions for applying the upgrade.

he has the correct lead
Yep, I have the correct lead and I have the sw update, all I need now is to buy another £30 lead so that I can apply the update and then hope the AMI works.
David
At last my IPOD works. Looks like I had the wrong cable all along, apparantly I need the cable with the black boot NOT the blue boot.

I DO have the blue boot on my AMI /iPod connector. Ive never had a problem with it and it DOES charge the ipod aswell.
-Current gen ipod classic
Just thought i'd throw that into the mix.

Quick general query......is the AMI software automatically updated to the latest version when the car is serviced at an Audi dealer?

no but ask the right person and your wish will be granted lol or ask him for his spare usb lead so you can do it yourself and keep the lead

Maybe this is because mine is an early 2008 car.

I'm new here so hello everyone :)
Recently purchased a second hand November 08 A4 Avant 2.0TDi. The car already had the AMI installed and an IPod cable although this will not connect with my Ipod!!
The cable is of the black band variety and I have the standard concert sound system (No Nav).
I have tried connecting both my 6th Gen 80Gb classic and my girlfriends 3rd Gen 8Gb Nano. Both devices charge when connected but neither sync up with the system properly and I never see the audi symbol on the IPod. I have also tried giving both devices a hard reboot but to no avail :(
Given I have tried it with 2 Ipods I'm guessing I have a problem with either the cable or the AMI. Reading this thread looks like the cable is the most likely problem. Is anyone able to advise what cable I need based on the above information?
Any help at all on this issue much appreciated.

I took the car into the garage yesterday morning because of a more serious problem with my ignition lock but while there I also mentioned the problem with the AMI.
They apparently updated the AMI to the latest version and it still did not work. They have diagnosed it as a cable fault and have ordered me a new one in which they will fit when the ignition switch is replaced when I get beck from holiday at the end of the month.
Apparently the 'ignition lock defective' fault is a common one and effects many many customers....thats according to the dealer anyway!!
