Hi
Seem to be having a rather loud gritty / grinding kind of sound coming fromt he engine bay when the aircon is either off or in ECON mode. This happenss on idle and when small revs are applied in gear (i.e. setting off etc). The noise does stil happen at times whent he aircon is on it's full mode, but far less noticeable.
The noise areas to be coming from the front of the engine bay, possible nearer the alternator.
Can anyone offer any suggestions at all? The noise does not sound at all healthy.
Thanks.

hi mate looks like your pulley on the alternator is gone its called the oneway clutch pulley about 55 pounds from dealers but you need a special tool to fit it

Hi, thanks for the info. Is that the top pulley? If so I had this replaced about 8k miles ago, as was squeaking on full lock, at parking speeds etc. This noise is much rougher tho. :(

The one on the alternator itself.

Funny this should come up, I have the same. I have the same sound, if you look down there you can see the tensioner I think and it keeps jumping a bit.

This has just started on my wife's 1.4 TDi Polo tonight, awful intermittent noise and tensioner "jumping". It's pouring down tonight!
Did anyone find an answer to the problem?

3 pot power!
Yes, it was the tensioner on the alternator belt. If you watch it when it happens, you'll see it jumping and that makes the noise.

Thanks for the quick response; I'll look at it in the morning. :D
Now, if only I could find out what the loud clunk in the steering/suspension is! :aargh4:

If the tensioner jumps, it is normally the alternator one way clutch that has failed.

Clunking could be axle bushes.

More likely a worn ball joint or twelve.

Just relating it to a common prob on the MkIV's.
