Hello i,m new to the forum having justed bought a March 06 reg A4 TDI SE Auto Avant.

The car has done 102k mls with FASH, Ive noticed that on start up there is a diesel knock/rattle for approx 8 seconds.

The noise is there all the time every time the engine is started (hot or cold).

Any advice would be welcomed.

Thanks

Craig

Check the flywheel as this sounds like the fault from cranking as the multitronic has no torque converter there is a flywheel.Sorry I misread and thought it was a manual but the symptom you describe also occurs on multitronics

Thanks for your speedy response, i will check in the morning and re post up, this is typical of my luck.

I dont think its fare to go back to the dealer i bought it off, he wouldnt know of this fault i dont think.

What am i looking at to fix it ?, will it be a big job with it being an Auto ?

Thanks

There is still a flywheel of sorts on the multi tronic which has the same effect and symptom

Oh well, will let you know.

Could be anything easier ? or cheaper.......

I wonder if Audi would help out with the cost as the car is only a week out of warranty and it does have full audi history from new.

Yes they may contribute to the part if this is the fault.Other possibilities may be the engine oil pump gear

Just found the timing hole, its on the nearside of the engine on the bell housing.

Its perfectly clear, no grease or anything in the hole.

Update for anyone else that may have the same problem, it was the air con pump pulley and £200 plus vat later its all good.

Thanks to for all replys

was it a metalic rattle as mine does it,
even changed the fan belt an tensioner but
still does it.

Hello not really, best way to check is remove the fan belt and run the engine see if the noise goes away, if it does then its something that is driven by the belt.

Looking at the pulley we have changed (and it was in stock at the dealer), i would say its a common fault.
