Hi guys,im looking at buying an A4 cab this weekend but im torn between the 1.8t and the 2.5v6 tdi.
Ive read that the tdi isnt that economical, and that the 1.8t does about the same mpg? Can anybody shed any light on this for me as econony is a major factor as i do lots of miles every week! Also, anything else i should look out for on a cabriolet?
Thanks in advance!

If economy is your major concern, you'd surely be better looking at a 1.9/2.0 TDI instead?

Yes thats true, but the 2.0tdi is much newer and too expensive for me at the minute:(

Neither model will average above 35mpg, I'd go for the 1.8T personally if you must have a cabrio. Similar money would get you a non-cabrio 2.0 TDI - much cheaper to run!
I am just a tight bugger though, I'd never even consider a car unless it does 50+mpg, I hate paying for fuel, there are much better things in life to spend money on!

if they are both the same on mpg i`d go for the 1.8t as i think a quieter engine is always better, ive got 1.9 tdi and i wish it was just that bit quieter!!

I'd def go down the 1.8T route especially if you want a cab. Nothing worse than cruising around in a lovely open top that sounds like a taxi. My bro's brand new 05 A4 diesel had only done a couple of hundred miles before the engine was making a racket :boggled:

personally think the 1.8t is underpowered my sister in law got a 2004 cab 1.8t 4 wheel drive. not really fussed on the mpg it gives either but then im used to a 1.9tdi, dunno what the 2.5tdi cab is like tho. this is all just my personal opinion, might be worth test driving them both 1st

Try and get to test drive both. I tried the 1.8 and felt it was a bit gutless in comparison to the 2.5 Tdi.

The V6 will pull like a train and should be silky smooth through the gears with a beautiful growl when pushed hard. 4 cylinder TDi's can sound like a diesel locomotive at Crewe!

I agree the V6 sounds a bit diesely at idle but it does develop a nice growl once off idle. I average about 40mpg in mine on my 20 mile commute which is a mix between fast motorway and a couple of slow miles at each end.

there's no way on god's holy earth the 1.8T does the same mpg as a 2.5tdi!! my 2.5tdi does considerable more mpg than my old octavia vrs did (same engine as 1.8T but smaller car!).

Mark, can you offer some miles per tank examples of the two? I was thinking the 1.8T would get about 300 miles out of a 65? litre tank with around town driving etc, don't know if this is realistic. Also which power level where each of the cars and was the 2.5 a quattro?

both 180bhp, mines a quattro! i get about 140 miles from £20 worth of diesel, in the skoda i used to get about 80.. big differance! this is just local town driving to and from work, on a run both figures go of course..
the skoda was quite good on a long run on the motorway but still not as good as my 2.5tdi 180....

I have two A4 saloons, both quattro. The 1.8T did around 27-28mpg and the 2.5TDi did about 34-35mpg. The 2.5TDi is pretty old hat these days but the torque makes it easier to drive than the 1.8T which needs to be driven a bit harder.
Difficult choice but from a maintenance point of view, and probably the cost of buying too, I'd have the 1.8T.
