pinking

my audi a4 1.8t 190 engine code BEX, has started to pink under load, it pinks only for a couple of seconds. good quality fuel is used always, with the occasional treat of super unleaded. timing has been checked and is spot on, there are no trouble codes stored and no engine warning lights ever showing. Would it need to run on super unleaded all the time??

Can you decribe pinking, not heard that beforeAlso is this a B8 A4 or older cause you say 190 but the current 1.8T does not come with that BHP as standard. Maybe the wrong part of the forum?

its a 2004 model, 190bhp as standard engine code BEX. only when you put throttle down the first few seconds it rattles.

Might not be pinking........ a rattling cat sounds very similar.

Get underneath and bang the cat........ if it rattles, there it is!

On the filler cap of my 04 1.8T 190, it says to use super unleaded 98 octane only although it does say normal 95 octane unleaded is sufficient if you can't get the premium stuff.

I only fill mine with Shell Optimax, it's especially good for the turbo and only amounts to around £3 extra per tankful over normal unleaded. You've got a great car that deserves the best fuel :D

Yep you were right, put the shell optimax in and all pinking gone. Car had no hand book so just assumed normal 95 ron would be ok. it also pulls alot better now! Cheers.

fixed it!! just dont use normal 95 ron unleaded ...it dont like it, put the shell optimax in and it felt like it gained 20 horses! pinking now gone!!
