Friend of mine bit peeved with auto gear box in A3 1.8. Bought new less than a year ago and is presently on 2nd replacement box that is still playing up. Selecting gears at random. Bit frightening at higher speeds!
What are members experiences of A3 auto boxes?

I bought my A3 1.8T SE S-Tronic new in April this year, 2.500 miles with no problems so far. However there's a noticeable flat spot between 1000 and 1500 rpm that makes pulling away from a standstill a bit of a lottery. Pulling away tends to be embarassingly gentle or, with a whiff more throttle, neck-snappingly quick. Whether that's the gearbox characteristics or the engine or both, I don't know, but the low speed behaviour leaves something to be desired IMHO. Apart from that the gearbox is good fun in manual and reasonably unnoticeable in auto, so I'm content with it so far.

Also having same problem with my 1.8Tfsi S tronic Sportback, on third mectronic unit in 16 months and 11000mls ! Apparently its a characteristic of the model, i don't remember reading that in the manual!
Is anyboby else with this engine/gearbox configuration having the same problem as the more complaints Audi gets, the more likely they are to resolve said issue ,according to head technician @ my local dealership. So far we are the only UK complainants registered with customer services, although we tested another 1.8 which displayed the same fault, the 2ltr petrol and diesel are smooth alround.
On a more positive note, the rest of the car is great ! Pitty Audi couldn't get the whole package right ?!

In the past few days, she has been offered a refund on the car. She was asked to pay 40p per mile for usage (8000 miles) £3200. This has now been reduced to £1200. She is likely to accept this offer.

My A3 2.0TDi S-tronic sportback has been in today and diagnosed as needing a new mechatronic unit. It's done 44-45,000 miles and is just under two years old.
Reading the above postings is disturbing, but I'm hopeful the new mechatronic will correct the issues in the same way it has for many other owners.
