My son tried to close the roof on my A4 cabriolet while the engine was switched off and the battery failed half way through . The AA managed to manually get the roof to close but now, even with a new battery, the automatic roof doesn't work. I have been quoted £800 by local Audi garage to fix this although they don't seem 100% sure of the problem. Any suggestions?

best bet is to have it scanned for faults vcds
you could try to reset the roof its in ur booklets u need to get the tool from the drivers side where fuse box is then unlock the roof at front top of screen pull middle from back seat and unlock there open fully then reclose and lock it up this should reset the roof

ignition off

remove the osf dash end cap where the fuse box lives and there at the side of the fuse box lives the release tool

On the front cross member above the interior mirror there is a square plastic blank

flick the blank out and insert the tool until the cog engages the motor and turn the red part of the tool handle to engage the tool into the motor

turn the tool anti clockwise to release the top locks and the roof will pop up a bit

Remove the tool and get a second person to lift the roof slowly from the opposite side of the vehicle until front section of the roof is pointing upwards and at the same time lift the rear part of the roof up.

Second person hold the roof in this position and pop the rear seat centre section out

The tool is needed again and it locates inside the ski hatch facing upwards

push the tool upwards again until you locate the motor and repeat the process for the front lock

the roof box will pop up and you need to lift the lid upright and slowly allow the roof to collapse into the storage box

close the lid and lock the motor with the tool then unlock the motor

lift the lid and lift the roof slowly until the front section is pointing at the sky and then shut the lid down and lock the motor

Allow the front section to drop into the front locks and lock the motor

the roof has been opened and closed so the lock micro switches should have reset.

Turn the engine on and open the roof fully then close it fully and that's should do it

if the operation is still faulty then there is a fault

Great instructions. My 05 S4 just partially opened. Followed these instructions and it reset no probs and now works again. I didn't even know it had a manual open/close facility so was just going to roll into the garage and leave until monday. Over the moon as the kids were all ready to go to the seaside.

Hi Chris, thanks mate. Yes I actually do their advertising as I work for radio and they said that the new tool will be aprox £200 and can take up to two weeks to arrive, didn't want to pay that in case the reset didn't work? Just needed to borrow one to try it, to put my mind at ease as got really screwed by the guy I got it off :-(

Hi everyone - newbie here, so be patient.

I was unfortunate to be travelling in the back of my friends A4 3.0 soft top (soon to be mine when he gets his Merc). Being 6ft 4 and not being able to bend my knee due to an accident, I was struggling to get out the back.
Being helpful and considerate my friend said he would pop the roof open to enable me to climb out the back (seemed reasonable), however when he activated the roof opening, the strut that supports the roof proceeded to lower onto my head, pushing it down onto my chest causing my jaws to clench, by now panic was taking over as I scrambled to get flat on the back seat, as I had visions of being crushed like in the back of a refuse truck.

Being new to Soft top convertibles, I would have expected the roof to have some sort of microswitch/sensors that if they detected resistance they would reverse (a bit like electric windows). Has anyone else had a near death experience like this? or are you aware of any safety switches on the roof mechanism to prevent this, or is this typical?

I dont intend travelling in the back of this car again, but it raises a concern.

Thanks

Nev
