Just had my Turbo off to be stripped and cleaned. As I had done this I thought I would go the whole hog and clean out the inlet manifold and the EGR valve. I was extremely shocked to see the amount of gunk that had built up inside the both. I removed enough of the oily susbstance to almost form a tennis sized ball. I know the car has done 130k but wow what a load of SH*T!!
TURBO was gunked up too and apparently seized in an open position.
The car now seems to run slightly better but still got the power loss issue.
If anyone is thinking of cleaning out the EGR I would definatley recommend it! Its gotta be good for the car if nothing else.

Dan - checking for and removing carbon fouling in the turbo on my A6 2.5 tdi, and cleaning the EGR are two jobs I am planning to have a closer look at.

So ... a couple of questions; what did you use to clean out the EGR valve? And then; did you strip the turbo yourself? If so, what did you use to clean it? The turbos look pretty simple (albeit delicate and built to close tolerances) and it looks like a perfetly doable home job. Am I being naive?

cheers,

James.

I simply used a long screwdriver to scrape the cr*p out and then some carb cleaner and some clean wrag to wipe it out!
I removed the turbo but took it to my mechanic to sort out. He claimed that it had been adjusted and messed with so he reset it for me.
This along with the fact they had put a rouge program on the ECU turned out to be my problem! Oh and a non VAG air mass meter!!

OK Dan, thanks for that. I imagine that there is no way of knowing (for me anyway) whether the turbo or ECU map have been messed with.

Excuse my ignorance, but what does the EGR control, what does it look like, and where is it situated?

Thanks in advance

Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve. Its located on the drivers side near the rear of the engine bay (on a tdi). It looks like a silver flying saucer. You may have to take your engine cover off to see it.
